I'm sure I've mentioned before that the Dalai Lama's personal monastery in the US is located in Ithaca. Here's an article telling about the recent move to a newly built location:

Quote:

America’s premier monastery finds new home on Danby

Nov. 7 will mark the first time Ithaca’s Namgyal Monastery’s community gathers for a group meditation in its new building, beginning a shift from the original location to the new one.

After a drawn-out construction period of seven years, the new addition to Namgyal was finished in August. The new building will soon become the primary monastery for Namgyal, leaving the fate of the original monastery unknown.
Here's the whole article:

Thanks ithacat. I saw those two earlier and actually posted the Marriott article in the General Developments section ( the Ithaca development thread) near the top of the forum main page). So glad to see that one finally starting.

Some disappointing/good/uh-oh news in this article about a recent planning board meeting (from the ithaca Times):

Quote:

Purity Ice Cream Owner to Ithaca Board: Expansion Plans Were Not Smoke Screen

Posted: Thursday, November 6, 2014 9:23 am
By Bill Chaisson

Bruce Lane, one of the owners of Purity Ice Cream, appeared before the City of Ithaca Planning and Development Board at their Tuesday, October 28 meeting to apologize for “the lack of flow of information” as his plans to redevelopment his building have changed over time. At the end of the September planning board meeting, board members and staff spoke of paying the site a visit because so little visible work had been done on the building while Purity had created a new parking lot across Meadow Street. Some members openly speculated that the building re-development had been a ruse to get the parking lot built.
There's more news than just this in the article linked here:

A video of Fall Creek gorge & suspension bridge. As a kid I use to go swimming under the suspension bridge. Too old and arthritic to walk down and back up the trail now.

Not actually in the City of Ithaca, but in the Town of Ithaca fairly close to Ithaca College (on South Hill), from the Ithaca Times:

Town Considers Sketch Plan for Troy Road Cluster Development

Posted: Tuesday, November 18, 2014 10:48 pm | Updated: 12:06 pm, Wed Nov 19, 2014.
By Michael Nocella reporter@ithacatimes.com

ITHACA—Developer Robert Bates of Leon N. Weiner & Associates of Wilmington, Del. is moving forward with his proposal for a 130-unit cluster development on top of a 63-acre parcel of land in the town of Ithaca located along Troy Road between Coddington and East King roads.
Bates, during a Tuesday, Nov. 18 town planning board meeting, was joined by Whitham Planning and Design, LLC Principal Scott Whitham and Principal of Stream Collaborative Architecture and Landscape Architecture DPC Noah Demarest in the unveiling of a sketch plan for the project. Whitham sent the board a letter to help prep Bates’ vision for the project.
“Currently zoned as Low Density Residential,” Whitham said in the letter, “this property can, in our opinion, better meet the town of Ithaca’s objectives as set in the comprehensive plan by a cluster subdivision approach. It is our goal to create a more sustainable and dynamic development than the current zoning calls for, with smaller, denser residential footprints that both conserve environmentally sensitive areas and create a new sense of neighborhood and identifiable community.”
According to the project’s overview, it will seek to provide a mix of housing types within a designated build zone consisting of 30 to 40 percent of the site, while “conserving and protecting environmentally sensitive areas in the remaining 60 to 70 percent.” During Tuesday night’s presentation, Bates and Demarest stressed that the project would focus on green project initiatives, with sustainable programs such as the community having its own orchard and farm, along with a solar presence. Demarest added that the project is in the very early phases of a sketch plan, with only its general footprint being laid out up to this point. He said the planning board’s feedback would help with the actually design of the units, but that at this point, the team has looked at other cluster development projects such as EcoVillage at Ithaca and Belle Sherman Cottages for inspiration.
That inspiration will come to fruition when Bates and his team presents a site plan for the project in the coming months.

Here's a great view of downtown Ithaca from Google. It can be zoomed, stopped, etc. It's from August 2014.

Nice short article (w/ pics) about a new restaurant downtown:

TC3 restaurant Coltivare opens to public Saturday

TC3's teaching restaurant in Downtown Ithaca, Coltivare, opens Saturday. The 110 seat restaurant and event space are part of the college's culinary arts, and hotel and restaurant management programs.
