A very ambitious proposal to say the least.
However, I am somewhere between an optimist and a realist
If this could ever come to fruition, This would be a huge tourism draw and a way to keep a fair portion of people in Manitoba spending money here vs. elsewhere.
I also know when The Ghermezian family first built West Edmonton Mall, opened 35 years ago, Edmonton had less than our population now boasts.
They also built Mall of America and many others.
West Edmonton Mall has a current value of near 1 Billion CAD.

I recall the days at outing hearing people say that MTS Centre will flop and Jets will never return etc... True North will never happen..
Well, all and hopefully SKyCiy will show them we are changing for the better.
So, time will tell.
Dream Big or stay small minded.

So be it. I'll preface my post by saying I am of a neutral opinion on this topic, but if a thread is created some information and perspective on the Article Murray McNeill of the Free Press with developer Anthony Panchoo should be added.

For those unable to View the Free Press

'Biggest, boldest development' in city's history
Mysterious developer wants to create multi-billion dollar, gigantic, enclosed world-class theme park

Quote:
A world-class amusement park, a world-class water park, a winter park, a regulation-size skating rink, two golf courses, two large luxury hotels (1,400-plus rooms), a 300,000-square-foot-plus convention centre, a 20,000-seat amphitheater/concert hall, up to 600 retail/office outlets, and about 500 condominiums. There will also be parks, walking trails, gardens and a grotto...

..The project (itself) is bankrolled. There are no issues with that," he said, adding what he and his partners will be asking the three levels of government to provide is the exterior infrastructure improvements that would be needed to support a development which, they believe, will attract hundreds of thousands of tourists each year..

..He said he and his partners already have a tentative deal to acquire a large parcel of land near Winnipeg. It’s contingent upon the site being suitable for the kind of extensive, underground geo-thermal network that would be required to heat, cool and power such a massive development. He said the results so far of ongoing environmental, engineering, and site-assessment studies are encouraging, and they hope to know for sure by this fall...

Besides all the reasons we've covered for why this project is pure, fresh from the ass bullshit, how is a 500 acre glass ceiling going to meet energy codes?

Yes. and your point is...?

For comparison's sake, a few years ago the Property Assessment of my former home at 59 Donald St. was worth more, $1.5 M.

It's now assessed at $4.5 M

For reference, I created these images from another site on what 500 Acres would look like in comparison to downtown Winnipeg, and Boeing's assembly plant in Everett, Washington.

OK serious question, what would be more realistic? Dreamscape as pitched or new world's tallest in Winnipeg, like beating out Burj Khalifa by 2m, that kind of thing.

I'd go with new world's tallest.

It's technically more like a dome then a building. So different codes.

Stepping back from the construction and financial aspects of Dreamscape for a minute, I think assembling 500 acres in or near Winnipeg for a reasonable cost could be a big enough challenge in itself to kill this project.

Hey. Rail yards are somewhere around 500 acres. There you go. Boom! All problems have been solved. Just build right over McPhillips Station Casino.

I can't believe this guy made it on CJOB.

Dreamscape should have its own NHL and CFL teams. Then we can have our own subway series, like NYC (assuming the Bombers and Jets ever make the playoffs again). We will then truly be big time

This thread reminds me of all the Sky City naysayers.
All the jets naysayers
Arena nay naysayers

You guys have leaked into every other thread here with dreamscape puns. Most of us come here for updates and info. Not to have to relive grade 9.

This dreamscape one is really the ultra pie in the sky project. Everything under a 500 acre roof. It's insanity. We're not talking about a 40 storey tower. We're talking about a multi billion dollar fantasy.

The Boeing factory is 100 acres and the largest building in the world by floor area (supposedly). And they want to build something with a clear roof that's 500 acres?

There's this one in Chengdu, China (population 15M) which is 1.7 square metres. Would seem to be something on a similar scale to this Dreamscape.

It isn't all under one roof. At least from what I read. Parts are under a roof.

As for 500 acres. That's not really that much. It looks huge when you overlap on DT. Go overlap it in a farmers field. It will be a little chunk of that field.

In fact on my many trips in the USA there are huge greenhouse farms that cover just as much.

I'm not saying this will get built with money for, any Canadian. Although if Thompson even built it. He would still have 23 billion left in his account after spending 2 billion.

You look at these Middle East kings and they throw money away like crazy on stupid things that never turn a profit as its all about status.

^ If David Thomson's name or that of some ultra-rich Saudi prince were attached to Dreamscape I might believe it. But the developer is some random guy who turned Alycia's Perogy Restaurant into a few low-end apartments. That's it. And his engineer sidekick.

How many people graduate from that level of small time development to building one of the biggest and priciest developments on God's green earth? Come on, let's use some common sense here.

It kind of reminds me of that nonsense mega-mall 3x the size of WEM that some Chinese group wanted to build in Dundurn, south of Saskatoon. To everyone's shock, nothing has been built yet. http://westerninvestor.com/index.php...r-tiny-dundurn
