Question Core Walls

Harry C Great Pictures!!!! Does anyone know if there would be a big enough benefit to round the core walls at the blow through floor to reduce air pressure vs the flat core walls? Just thinking:

That would be so sick. I love slosh dampers lol. NEMA has (or almost has) one. I don't think it will be an amenity level, no matter how cool that would be. When city approved the blow thru floor they added stipulations that it had to be unoccupied and cannot be lit at night. Can't remember my source on that though

As mentioned by others, the glass really POPS on overcast days. It is gorgeous. Love the Feb 12th shots, Harry.
It shows the purple undertones on these overcast days, too... one of the few benefits of winter skies! Can't wait to see how it looks in the summer!

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense considering (if I'm not mistaken) the core is smaller on the floors directly above and below as well.

If the it is a city ordinance that it is not able to be lit at night then that is a damn shame. One of the most redeeming qualities of 432 Park in NYC is how the blow through floors look awesome lit up at night.

From CAB:

Quote:
The rolling stones at city hall see the dead floor and they want to paint it black. All of it. The walls, the core, the ceiling, slow pigeons — everything in the double-height 83rd floor will be black. And, by law, the space cannot be illuminated. So when Vista twinkles in the Chicago skyline at night, she will have a black choker across her neck.

Building_Guy was also right, the article states:
Quote:
wind tunnel tests show that the blow-through floor is going to need help from multiple TLSDs to keep Vista rock steady.
Multiple!!!

When the post-mortem is done on this building engineering wise, I wonder if they will regret not running the outer sheer wall all the way up? The upper portion is perched like a vase on a tiny table. So now they have a huge blow through floor and twin TLSDs, when it's looking to my untrained eye like the top portion just isn't strong enough.
I get they wanted to maximize sellable area, but they ended up losing two whole floors.
If they had it to do over, maybe losing more of each floor is the better trade?

I don't think the issue was that the top portion isn't strong enough, the concern was more about building sway on the upper floors. The sheer walls are load bearing so I'm not sure what effect it could have had on sway to run them the height of the building, but I'm not an engineer.

Assuming it would have alleviated the problem, it does beg the question of which option would have been more expensive. Cost overrun in additional material costs to run the sheer walls to the top VS. the cost overrun they incurred with the late stage redesign of those floors.

^ I think you've got the right idea there.

I'd guess swaying wasn't related to height of shear walls. I need to get my engineering buddy to start posting here.

I assumed the sheer walls were more to avoid torquing of the building's torso, and had little to do with swaying with the wind.

Nice grey day colors:

Enjoy the lights in the blow through floors while you can everyone!

Dog shots:

President's day was beautiful:

I think I might be a bit obsessed with this tower... couldn't pick my favorites so I'm posting them all! Her only bad angle is the one you can't see her from

Side note... go on the river walk at night during the winter if you can brave it... it's beautiful!
