Vancouver is home to countless watering holes—including but not limited to distinctly Irish pubs, very Canadian bars, and nerdy yet entertaining drinking spots where you can play board games.
If you’re looking for a place that’s a little more exciting, most locals would point you to the Shameful Tiki Room (4362 Main Street). It’s popular not only for its exotic cocktails, but also because it truly allows you to escape reality.
Rod Moore is the owner and mastermind behind the Polynesian-themed establishment, and now he’s getting ready to open up another immersive tavern in the city: Dark Manor Inn (4298 Fraser Street).
The 1,400-square-foot space is worlds apart from its tropical counterpart on Main Street. Inspired by the Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland, guests should be prepared to step inside a macabre room filled with creepy framed photos, gargoyles, skulls, old hard-covered books, and even a coffin table.
“We went back to [Disneyland] and I went on the ride three times in a row just to make sure that I really had the gist of it,” Moore explained to the Straight in an interview at the Dark Manor Inn. “I think the neat and genius thing of Walt Disney is that he wanted it to be a haunted house, but he wanted it to be accessible to all people.”
That doesn’t mean children won’t feel uneasy if they do enter this soon-to-open spot. The dimly lit 50-seat whiskey bar transports you back to the late 1800s, complete with damaste wallpaper, scarlet-hued velvet upholstered banquet seats, hauntingly beautiful chandeliers, and arguably the centerpiece of the entire room: a gothic-looking master-of-house chair taken directly from Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events.
