New York halts most construction
Only transit, hospital and affordable housing will continue

March 27, 2020
By Kathryn Brenzel and Sylvia Varnham O’Regan

Quote:
Some sites, including part of LaGuardia Airport and Moynihan Train Hall, have temporarily stalled work due to sick workers. SL Green Realty confirmed that one worker at One Vanderbilt had tested positive for Covid-19 Thursday but had self-quarantined since March 14. The case did not shut down work on the office tower.

Related Companies’ 50 Hudson Yards also had a worker with Covid-19, according to multiple construction professionals, though the company did not return multiple messages seeking comment on how the situation was handled.

I'm starting to think this second phase of Hudson Yards is going to resemble downtown Manhattan. A wall of fat squat boring bland modernist buildings.

I wouldn't say squat, but certainly massive.

In the first picture of the NYGuy's last post, you can see that the cladding/glazing has started throughout the first floor of 50 Hudson.

50 Hudson Yards is an upright campus on Manhattan’s West Side, stacking three distinct blocks of commercial space one atop the other. Outlined with pure white stone cladding, each block is separated by the dark banding of the floors behind fully glazed façades.

The staggered blocks illustrate the changing scale of the floorplates, with the set-backs creating external terraces that have spectacular views in all directions.

The east and west sides of the tower are broken into four-story glass boxes framed by white stone, with glass framing the cityscapes. Accentuating the verticality of the building on the north and south façades, the upright structural elements are also clad in white stone.

The building’s peak will be capped by a “halo,” adding a new glow to the New York City skyline when lit at night.

Even though it'll be a while before this (and other projects) pick up steam, I'm glad to see the direction NY is heading with skyscrapers in general. The entire Hudson Yards projects wasn't there just FIVE years ago. Now, it's a sign of New York Resurgence. Will the current pandemic affect things? Obviously. But I always see skyscrapers as a gradual creation of "the future"; an endless yet amazing progression of life. In time, construction will resume and we'll be taking cool photos from Edge and 1Vand in no time!

NYC will always have the most dynamic and interesting skyline for me, but Hudson Yards's completed look will SOOO give off some "Blade Runner" vibes! We're in the midst of the 21st century now. This isn't years ago when there might have been hope NY would win the Olympic bid. Can you imagine the area now if that had happened? It'd be empty with a new stadium and other Olympic buildings that wouid've been long-forgotten in the midst of the pandemic.

So while some of these current buildings may lack extreme flair, it's as NYguy said a while back about how one doesn't have to like a design to mark its progress. Instead of the Olympics, NY has a new neighborhood that was built over previously-unused spaced. With infrastructure upgrades to boot, I say NY won in the end for not getting the bid.

Seeing 50 Hudson eventually complete (along with the other surrounding projects) once you get above ground from the train station, it's gonna REALLY feel like its own neighborhood! You'll barely recognize you're in NY if you haven't been in 5+ years. Can't wait to see the "New New York"!

TL;DR: I like skyscrapers and these new buildings are cool!

If you ever doubt the architecture of Hudson Yards, just remember this video of what could've been with the Olympic Village

It's basically a slice of Midtown "proper" placed over on the west side "desert". All made possible with an extension of a single subway line. But make no mistake, what we may see as a "lack of flair" would be just the opposite for tenants looking for modern office space, with all the bells an whistles to be had in today's market. For them, and the people who will fill these towers, they will be fantastic, and the envy of many. I've seen a few people say that it was "unlike" the rest of the city. And that's true to a certain degree. But mostly because its still a work in progress, not even close to being half built. In another decade, it will be fully integrated with the rest of midtown. Even with every thing that's built now, it's still an area of large empty lots, construction, and railyards. That's changing at a rapid pace.
