Casper, Wyoming

I was in Casper for one night over the Memorial Day weekend. I have been through the city many, many times, but have never before taken the opportunity to check out the downtown area.

I was pleasantly surprised by the seemingly vibrant center of the metro area, with a whopping population of 75,500.

These were taken at 8:00am on a Saturday morning, so no one was around.

Take a look:

There are two downtown theaters, both showing first-run movies:

The downtown shopping/entertainment street:

The "massive" First Interstate Bank tower:

The Wells Fargo clam (the sign is the tallest structure downtown):

Railroad station:

Mountain views/street vistas:

City Hall:

Misc:

Interesting. We definitely don't get a lot of Wyoming on here.

That Wells Fargo is straight-up wacky. I kind of like it.

Nice to see some Wyoming on here.

It's not often you see funky architecture like that Wells Fargo branch in a no-frills area like Wyoming.

Never been to Casper so it is nice to see what it is like. I knew a lot of guys that worked up there. It looks a lot nicer than Rocks Springs, WY which might be the worst town I've ever been to.

Love those theaters. And the fact they are showing first-movies in them.

Nice to see this city. Looks quite solid and in good shape. I was wondering if the Wells Fargo building is suppose to be a flower with a big old stamen?

Thanks for the tour.

Indeed, we don't get much of Wyoming at all. I am glad you visited Casper and shared these images with us!

This is where Dick Cheney is from? No wonder he is such as asshole. This place is uninspiring. I would start shit with people too, out of boredom.

Oh gee, I always associated Casper with a friendly ghost. Didn't realize it had this frightening connection.

I guess it's seemingly vibrant considering what we come to expect of many American downtowns (i.e. wholesale abandonment/vacancy). That said, it certainly has some great bones to work with.

BTW, the First Interstate Bank seems clearly taller than the Wells Fargo spire.

Can't say I've ever seen pics of this place.

Looks a bit sleepy, but OK otherwise.

More substantial than I'd have guessed.

Cheyenne is a pretty nice town too.

I love Casper. You must have caught downtown at a dead time. The last time I was there, I could barely find a parking space downtown. I refused to park in a lot or a garage because I refuse to pay for parking in Wyoming. Something just doesn't seem right about that.

The residential neighborhoods of Casper are very nice and look much, much nicer than any neighborhoods Cheyenne has to offer. The downsides of Casper is that it is 4.5 to 5 hours from the closest "major" city (Denver), the weather there is unpredictable and extremely finicky (evidenced by your photos of bare trees in the end of May), and that it is Dick Cheney's hometown.

Wyoming might just be the most misunderstood state in this country. People who have never been to Wyoming just assume that it is just empty, barren prairie with bison.
