BTW I just realized that One Vanderbilt's structural height is only 5 ft above 432 Park Ave's. I bet the former added a spire just to beat the latter in official height! But you might argue that the spire is to make One Vanderbilt resemble the Chrysler Building.

One Vanderbilt was supposed to be 1,501 ft, and as high as 1,514 when it was being designed. Some floors were removed as it was being finalized, bringing the height down to 1,401 ft. It's just a coincidence that it just beats out 432 Park.
As for the design, I've always felt if was an homage of sorts to the ESB and the Chrysler, the towers of that era that crowned and defined the city's skyline. So much so that it will be confused by many tourist as possibly the ESB, especially when it's lit at night. Of all the new supertalls going up on the skyline, this is the one that was specifically planned by its developer to be a new, skyline defining icon.
