I have that skyscraper book shown in that image. Chrysler being the front cover. Maybe in time due, Vanderbilt or Verre!

Too many to choose from honestly. 45 Broad , 9 Dekalb... it goes on. Not only is this hyper boom one of the greatest, but one of the best in terms of architecture gems.

Did the architect say that? I am surprised, though I do see a little bit of resemblance between One Vanderbilt and the ESB. Just a little bit.

BTW I just realized that One Vanderbilt's structural height is only 5 ft above 432 Park Ave's. I bet the former added a spire just to beat the latter in official height! But you might argue that the spire is to make One Vanderbilt resemble the Chrysler Building.

One Vanderbilt was supposed to be 1,501 ft, and as high as 1,514 when it was being designed. Some floors were removed as it was being finalized, bringing the height down to 1,401 ft. It's just a coincidence that it just beats out 432 Park.

As for the design, I've always felt if was an homage of sorts to the ESB and the Chrysler, the towers of that era that crowned and defined the city's skyline. So much so that it will be confused by many tourist as possibly the ESB, especially when it's lit at night. Of all the new supertalls going up on the skyline, this is the one that was specifically planned by its developer to be a new, skyline defining icon.

I've had that book since 1996, one year before I joined this forum

If someone told me then that a tower like this would be going up so close to the Chrysler, I never would have believed them.

I've always viewed One Vanderbilt as sort of an ESB 2.0. A bigger more modern version. Its turning out a lot better than the renderings imo.

Seeing the facade in person also reminds me of 601 Lexington (in a good way) with a modern twist.

I had it too, many years ago, but I don't think I have it in my possession any more. Everyone in my family knew I was (and am) a skyscraper fanatic and if memory serves it was a Christmas gift to me some time in my teens.

I now see that it's designed to be the lovechild between the ESB and...not the Chrysler, but 1 WTC. It would have played this role even better had it been 1,500+ ft as originally designed, because it's in an area with many other tall buildings, so it's harder to stand above the crowd. It's easier for the ESB and 1 WTC to stand out.

^ haha -- i'm not sure i'm buying the bold move of tying those three buildings together like that in the bold render. nice pitch though. we'll see.
