Seems to me that this thread started, because Jets wanted to get a sense of people's thoughts regarding the final cost. Can't add a poll to an already existing thread.

Some chose to respond, and discussion ensued. While you may not like to hear differing opinions, many do; and many of which like to do some forum polls. Please don't display crocodile tears because Jets wanted to create a new thread, so he could have a poll.

Back on topic, interesting poll results. At the time I'm writing this, 13 respondents thus far gave a response, and the most commonly selected response is that it will be $450-M+, with 46% responding that way. If such cost becomes reality, how could Gail fundraise the additional shortfall from non-public sources? I'm guessing that the private funding has been pretty much tapped to the max at this time... can she convince her big donors to write another cheque? I'm guessing not. Unless more politicians come to reality, it'll be on the back of the taxpayer.

I am paying as well living in Calgary as are all employed Canadians. I am paying Federal taxes which most of this funding is coming from so no matter where you live in Canada you have a say in it...

In fact the Federal Government is putting in twice as much as the City of Winnipeg and the Province of Manitoba not to mention the operational costs funded by the Federal Government going forward.

Saying all that, I am an employee paying the max in Federal taxes 29% of total income tax and I fully support this project despite the increase in construction costs...

Here are some numbers for three other major Canadian museums. Based on the numbers below, the CMHR costs appear to be in line with other museums, even with the increased costs. This is not a justification for or against the museum (other any major museum for that matter), just some numbers. Note the dates of completion.

The National Museum of Man became the Canadian Museum of Civilization. In 1989, the museum moved in to the new facility. At the time of its opening, the cost of the museum had ballooned from an initial estimate of approximately $80 million to approximately $340 million. Despite initial criticisms of the perceived Disney-ficaton of the museum, its enormous costs, unique architecture, and unfinished exhibits from many quarters (including the Conservative government of Brian Mulroney), the museum soon became a major tourist attraction and was embraced by different political factions as a national symbol of "a pluralistic, multicultural society."[7] The museum attracts over 1.3 million visitors per year, making it Canada's most-visited museum.

The facility design features a 278 foot long colonnade that draws visitors into the 140 foot high Great Hall. Public circulation spaces, comprising streets and piazzas, lead to the galleries contained in a series of pavilions, each of which has a distinct character and style.

ROM (not officially a National Museum, but equal in scale) Opened in 1984 by Queen Elizabeth II, a $55 million expansion was built in a simple modernist style of poured concrete, glass, and pre-cast concrete and aggregate panels. It took the form of layered volumes, each rising layer stepping back from Bloor Street, hence creating a layered terrace effect. Though the design of this expansion won a Governor General's Award in Architecture, this last set of galleries was torn down in 2004 in favour of a new expansion designed by architect Daniel Libeskind.[5] Existing galleries and buildings are also being modified. Renovated galleries in the historic buildings will reopen in stages, and all work is scheduled to be completed by 2010.[6] The final cost of the expansion project will be $270 million CAD.
