Hannover, Steintor quarter - this ain quanit.

Well, I think it's enough of me posting pictures of quaint German towns or the nice beautiful parts of Hannover.

These pictures were taken in october 2007 and show the 'Steintor area" in Hannover. It's a very central part of town and includes the red-light
quarter. It's more a commercial part of town than a place where people live.

This area of Hannover was pretty much totally destroyed in WW2 and only the Anzeiger Hochhaus (1928) and a few other houses survied, the rest was rebuild as cheaply and unfortunately ugly as possible.

A few 'survivors".

This street ends at the university.

The Anzeiger Hochhaus, Hannover's first 'Skyscraper' built in 1928

The Gehry tower

A lot of clubs opened in the red-light district in the last few years and this area is now a very popular distric to
enjoy nightlife. Only 10 years ago the police used to patrol these streets with machine-guns.
Those times are over.

What would Goethe think?

This used to be a bath and is an art-gallery nowadys.

Ruins the Nikolai-chapel (1325) destroyed in WW2..

The historic St. Nikolai cemetary.

Very authentic place

The postwar buildings sure don't win any beauty contests, but they give that part of the city a very functional and unpretentious feel. Good stuff!

Yeah, if this is as ugly as Hannover gets, then it must be a beautiful city... seems quite diverse and interesting to me.
I like this pic very much.

Thanks for the comments. Well, in my opinion Hannover is a very beautiful city but you have to make a little effort to find the really beautiful spots.
I also really like the gritty parts of town, what would a city be without them?

I love the Gehry tower very much, it's an eyecatcher and when the sun goes down and it glows it's really beautiful too.

Sorry for the spelling errors, I actually wanted to click preview first but didn't so I would really appreciate it if a mod could correct the title?!

Definitely haven't seen pictures of that area of Hannover before, an interesting tour to say the least.

Interesting to see these parts of Hannover. That skyscraper from 1928 is very nice, and that yellow-greenish building is pretty cool. So is the Gehry building. I think the context is interesting there, how it's squeezed in between very ordinary, low houses.

Great tour ! I live now in a suburb in the Hannover region and I love and hate this place.I know many who say the red-light is mostly in the hands of the Hells Angels , and the Hannover chapter is said to be the largest Angels chapter in the world , ruling also in Hamburg , where their chapter was strictly forbidden in 1983 . But their are more gritty areas in Hannover.
The Anzeiger tower from 1928 is by night illuminated in blue like the tribune tower.
