We took a look at Eddie Meyer's Trading Post (used airplane lot) at Third Street and Vermont. Could have sworn I'd seen a head-on image of the sign to the right (with an address).

http://imageshack.us/a/img853/6996/udx8.jpg http://skyscraperpage.com/forum/show...ostcount=16039

The "Trading Post" image/s were from '46. No obvious CD listing for that year. Curious about any contemporary aerial images depicting the aircraft. Noted a couple of undated aerials documenting the (eventual) construction of Ralph's Groceries at Third and Vermont. The images certainly establish enough open land for small aircraft to touch and go, and views of the Sacatela / Bimini Slough.

Per earlier posts, Eddie Meyer went on to touch other areas of transportation, from "Hollywood."

Does anyone recognize this coffee shop? That striped menu could be a valuable clue............................

On the left of the above photo, across the street in the background, is most likely the marquee of the Paramount (El Capitan) Theater,
so I'm guessing that she is in Toff's Coffee Shop that was on the corner in the area of all the photos in the post.

Even though we know this is Hollywood (that's the Warner Theater with the tower on the right), and we know it's somewhere along Hudson street (there's a sign),
I can't get my coordinates

__

We're south of the Boulevard on Schrader. I can't explain the sign (above) unless the street name was changed at some point. Schrader almost lines up w/ Hudson. Neither cross Hollywood Blvd (Schrader running south of it and Hudson to the north):

That's the Hudson Apartments, formerly the Hillview (Parcher & Strong 1916-20). It was financed by Lasky and Goldwyn and is no stranger to the thread:

Here's a reference to the street name change:

- St. Brendan was our parish church in the 1950s and early 60s and also for me in the 1970s. I thought the view looked familiar right away. I remember the Craftsman house on the SW corner of 3rd and Van Ness well. Thanks to tovanger2 and CityBoyDoug for elaborating!

The Ralphs at 3410 W Third--seen in both views above across Vermont Avenue from the house circled--appears to have
been built in 1948. As for the house, it is 317 S Vermont.... Its story is here

Manchester Ave., just east of Hoover, looking west. Appropriately, the flag partially visible on the right has been lowered to half-staff:

Manchester Ct. is gone, it's now part of a school playground. Jack in The Box and the bldg adjacent with the "DEAF" signage in '65 survive....incredible how many retail businesses deserted the area following the riots:

As was noted, Julian Wasser was the photographer of this iconic shot. It's been reproduced repeatedly since it was taken in August 1965

Wasser's website is here

A short article/book review re Wasser, and Weegee's influence on the teen, is here

"One day the bureau [AP] was visited by the legendary crime photographer Arthur Fellig, better known as Weegee, who was in Washington promoting a book. “He invited me to ride along with him in his car,” says Wasser. “He had an old Chevy, and he’d cruise around the city taking pictures. He was a fat dirty slob but he was very interesting, and as a spot news photographer he was the best.” The only advice he gave the young upstart was “find another profession”, but Wasser was hooked. “I would steal my father’s car and listen to my police radio, respond to the calls and shoot pictures that I would sell to The Washington Post. They paid only $25 a picture."

coagula

...I'd guess Wasser was there b/c he was well-trained, very experienced and obsessed w/ getting the shot.

To be honest I had never heard of Phyllis Morris and her poodle lamps until I happened upon the above photographs.

I found one of her lamps at an auction site.

Note the roof line of the buildings on the west side of Broadway in each photograph. Thrifty's was at 8763 S. Broadway. There are two shotguns to be seen in the 1965 picture: with the eye of faith, the less threatening one seems to say 8700 S.

Jane Cowl in Robert Sherwood's Broadway play, "The Road to Rome." This played at the Belasco for three weeks in '28.

Quote:
" . . . The Road to Rome" . . . a triumph for feminism. But what ever Its symbolical intent, If It has any, this play by Robert Emmet Sherwood, currently at the Belasco Theater, with Miss Jane Cowl, is thoroughly delightful, rather magnificently naughty, and fraught with a certain penetrating meaning as well. "The Road to Rome" played to a large and interested audience at its opening last evening. It drew the reward of laughter, and the emoluments of applause, and proved in practically every respect a triumph for its author, its star, and a generally competent cast. Sherwood's play has been much talked about. It is here for an engagement of only three weeks. That it will draw crowds scarcely needs prophesying. 8-15-1928 LA Times
Does a generally competent cast imply some incompetence?

Huh. That's a Max Maltzman building from 1946. Maltzman also did the Ravenswood, the Wilshire Bowl & many others including 410 N Rossmore (sort of), if you remember that one.

Excellent. Thank you Lorendoc.

St. Brendan Church appeared in the Our Gang/Little Rascals 1930 film "Pups is Pups." It's the church seen at the end of the film when Wheezer is reunited with his pups.

Here's a then-and-now video of the locations used in the film, including the church...

I visited the church a few months ago and went inside. It's a beautiful church.

Well, she or a customer were doing ok, because that looks like a Rolls Royce Silver Cloud parked in the lot :-)

They were/are legendary for having the most incredible Heath Robinson (hey, it's an English car) braking system ever devised:

Several sources say St. Brendan was the church used in the last moments of the 1953 'War Of The Worlds

"The church, where Dr. Forrester (Gene Barry) searches for Sylvia (Ann Robinson) as time runs out for the human race, is St Brendan’s, Third Street at Van Ness Avenue."
http://www.movie-locations.com/movie...l#.WGanbhsrJPY

But when I watched this clip the interior looks different.

...so I'm not entirely sure what scene they're talking about.

For comparison, here's the amazing sanctuary of St. Brendan.

I couldn't help but notice the glow at the peak of the roof.

Well it turns out the church has a unique skylight!
