London dodged one in the late 1980s. They built the downtown CitiPlaza which spent most of the first 2 decades half empty but now it basically full. The dodging was that another developer wanted to build an even bigger downtown mall just 4 blocks away. Both would be rotting right now if both were built.

Kings on Fourth is fully dead. I believe the site is owned by BCIMC now and they're set to go ahead with a ~2000 unit development that will take up the entire block in three (quite basic) towers.

Yeah, I don't remember these ones, must have been before my time. However, they're certainly not monsters. That render shows two completely unoffensive towers. Banal, sure, but holy fuck this city has a good dozen towers that are categorically worse than those.

Wow, I don't even wanna think how much wind loading this thing would take on if it got built! Not to mention that thing might've swayed like crazy during a chinook or a strong windstorm.

If condiment coloured stucco is your thing then yeah they would have been great.

And why did the balconies only go halfway up?

PS: It was long before you moved to Calgary. From the ‘08 boom years.

It got re-designed into something much nicer.

We all loved the potential for 3EC. The final design was clumsy and cheap. Didn’t Shaw sign on to be the main office tenant? Surprising it still fell through.

Three words: the Edmonton Omniplex. Forget Olympic Stadium, had this been built it would have been the biggest white elephant in Canadian history. Alberta during the 60s/70s oil boom certainly dreamt big...

The project might sound familiar: it was to be a downtown sports arena that would act as an economic catalyst, spurring an economic boom, capturing millions of tourist dollars, and boosting civic pride. But Omniplex wasn’t just a hockey arena. It was football field, a convention centre, a concert venue, and a dining destination stacked with luxury restaurants. By the time the models were revealed to the public in the late 1960s, it had morphed into perhaps the most ambitious plan ever hatched for an arena in North America.

That would have been crazy to see in Edmonton in today's day and age! Also, can't get over how big the cars used to be back then! They look like small boats!

It wouldn't have surpassed the Big O for sheer white elephantiness… that facility is in a league of its own for sure.

I'm sure this facility probably would have faced numerous problems because of its complicated design... I'd imagine that it likely would have followed a trajectory along these lines:

1972 - Facility opens, everyone is thrilled, Edmonton is "on the map"

1980 - Peak success as powerful Oilers and Eskimos teams pack the joint routinely

1990 - Lack of revenue generating stuff (suites, club seats, lounges, etc.) and mechanical problems start getting the Oilers upset

1993 - Governments give in and sink a pile of money into renovating the place

2001 - It's not good enough anymore, the Oilers start planning their own new rink

2005 - New Edmonton rink opens, Oilers leave

2011 - Repair costs of the aging facility are getting immense, Eskimos decide to leave for a new outdoor stadium

2015 - New Edmonton stadium opens, Eskimos leave

2016 - Edmonton demolishes the Omniplex and the site is redeveloped

I don't think it would've been all that much different than how Rexall Place's history played out.

Your not wrong. I mean...its basically what happened to every other multi purpose stadium. I don't see how Edmonton's would have been any different.

This is the biggest bullet we dodged! I couldn't imagine a 2000' tower right now, let alone in the 70's!

Yeah these were totally awful! lots of black, yellow and brown and a schizophrenic design, no thanks!

The Ironwood looks alright, I am glad we got Encore instead though.
