The poll takes out of context what "have" means, but interesting nonetheless.

True, but by doing so it better represents how people subjectively feel about the direction the province is heading.

"Have" or "Have-not" is in reality a black and white distinction, another poster touched on this on the previous page. "Have" is simply the ability to pay our own way, we all know this, but there are many people who don't understand it and associate "Have" status with the general wealth and well-being of the province, which seems to be what this poll measures, and those sentiments vary by region.

Although, hopefully oil exploration pans out and Black Spruce gets the go ahead for fracking operations so that this region can start pulling its own weight and contribute to our provincial growth.

I guess, technically speaking, being a "have" province means not receiving equalization payments from the federal government. But personal definitions of "have" could vary quite substantially depending on who you're talking to and even the region of the province where that individual lives... similar to what Trevor touched on.

It's funny that when we became "have" and Ontario became "have-not" that the meanings became more technical. Before that "have-not" certainly meant welfare-bums in much of the Ontario press. I also find it strange that nobody ever calls Quebec "have-not" or welfare-bums even though it receives most of the equalization money.

Well, that's normal. Even on this forum, we can see it in conversations about the economy. Every other province's economy is legitimate - ours is somehow an illusion or an unintended consequence of federal policies for which we deserve no recognition or credit.

"You're only doing so well because of the oil. And that'll run out." - yeah, and every other province is only doing so well because of X, and that too will run out. And people give a free pass to cities that are all but completely dependent on government welfare industries like defense, etc.

Local Business Owners' Confidence Strong

Quote:
The province's business barometer continues to show that the confidence level of local business owners remains well above the national average. That's according to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business which says 51 per cent of respondents cite that their business performance is good. One-third of those asked plan on adding full-time staff in the coming months. Optimism among Canadian small and mid-sized businesses tumbled in June dropping below 60 per cent this month, while the overall business barometer in this province is at 66.3 percent.

^ That is so cool to see, thanks for the photo AllBlack. If you can get more as the construction progresses that would be even cooler!

I hope this is already being done, but a timelapse of the construction would be great to watch. I've see other concrete bases (like Hebron's) rise through timelapse videos and it's incredible to watch.

Latest unemployment numbers are out:

http://www.cbc.ca/news/interactives/unemployment-stats/

I think for the first time in my 30 year lifetime, NL no longer has the highest unemployment rate among all of the provinces in Canada. New Brunswick now has the highest at 11.2%, while NL and PEI trail at 10.9%. I know these are only very small differences and could change again next month, but still exciting to see our unemployment rate steadily go down!

The unemployment rate for the St. John's Urban Area (I assume it's only the UA because it defines the population as 165,000. We're 106,000 City, and 200,000 Metro. So it must be UA) is 6.1% in June, 2013.

Halifax is 6.6%, Moncton is 7.1%.
