Well, the FAA has a damn good argument to not issue this thing a permit or give it the greenlight. That lil ole thing called MIA is just a few miles away and it falls right in the take off/approach path.

This thing looks like a pair of tweezers for goodness sakes, I wouldn't wish this on any city.

Very interesting proposal (or fantasy). However; my obvious guess would be this thing won't have a chance of being built anywhere in this country, let alone in Miami, a city that has yet to see its first supertall built.

This is true, its doubtful that they would allow such a building in any place that could cause a hazard to an airport.

I agree

I watched the video on the Miapolis website, and to show the views outside the tower
they inexplicably used the Chicago skyline.

Obviously the website is to attract investors.
I would think they might want to rethink that decision, and perhaps use....say....MIAMI.... as the backdrop.

Duh.

This is the link to their site.

That website looks like it was some architecture students thesis not an actual proposal. And god damn, that name and building looks like something straight out of the 70s.

Im not so sure how I feel about the massive base that looks like it is a few hundred feet tall. I think that Dubai has it down, but I hope if they do build something like this in the US that they make a new design!

If you've lived in Miami, you might have heard of this Socarras guy. He's been pushing this project and trying to get financing for this project for the past 12 years and was on the news after 9/11 talking about how he was more determined than ever to build the world's tallest in Miami.

Miapolis: Developer Still Dreams of World's Tallest Building in Miami
By Kyle Munzenrieder in Unreal Estate Thu., Jan. 14 2010 @ 3:15PM

For nearly a decade, Guillermo Socarras has had a dream of constructing the world's tallest building in Miami. But plans have shifted. Backers, if they were ever really there, have backed out. The local economy, especially the building boom, has flat-lined. And just earlier this month, Dubai's Burj Khalifa, the tallest manmade structure in the world, officially opened to the public.

But Socarras holds on to his dream, and just this week, he unveiled a website detailing his plans for Miapolis -- a 3,000-foot-tall, 160-floor tower on Watson Island that would house an amusement park, marina, cultural centers, retail shops, and eateries.

Renderings of the building, by local firm Kobi Karp, absolutely dwarf Miami's newly "Manhattanized" skyline, suggesting we should now be prepared for Dubai-zation.

The tower would replace tourist-trap/landmark Jungle Island, and the website claims the project would inject $2.5 billion annually into the local economy.

Miapolis -- more than twice the height of America's current tallest building, Willis Tower (the former Sears Tower in Chicago) -- is certainly a thrilling proposition that will fire up emotions for or against it, but it might be little more than a pipe dream. The Miami Herald talked to numerous market analysts who say that finding the financial backing for the project would be nearly impossible.

Socarras seems to be taking it seriously, though, entering into discussion with the FAA about the potential impact the structure could have on flights.

I love this design. I know I'm probably the only one but I don't care. It would be great to have the tallest skyscraper again in the U.S. I like the fact that it would be on an island, be green, and be futuristic.

I agree it probably won't get built though... There are too many Nimby's, design complainers, the FAA's usual garbage, and just all-around regressives to keep something this ambitious from happening.

Cool This is a project that should be scrapped

[QUOTE=Biff;4661883]bhhhhaaaa, in this one case i hope the FAA is able to enforce it's height restrictions. That thing is awful. I'm sure the chance of it getting built are slim however.[/QUOTE[/B]
