London Luton Airport – Direct Air-Rail Transit
Unlike other London airports, Luton doesn’t have a railway station connected to the airport terminal, to rectify this, a new people mover is being built to connect the present Terminal 1 (and future Terminal 2) with Luton Airport Parkway station on the Midland Main Line (travel time to St Pancras is just 30 minutes). Luton Airport Parkway is also being completely rebuilt with a far larger concourse and pedestrian bridge. Unblock the Croydon Bottleneck
The Croydon area is a complex arrangement of several lines in south London focused around the Brighton Main Line (BML). Each weekday some 1,700 trains and 300,000 passengers pass through the area, but it suffers from a significant number of delays to services due to the presence of several flat junctions, limited number of lines and station layouts that cause severe congestion.

With substantial population growth along the BML corridor and additional capacity (via the recently completed Thameslink and new high-capacity 'metro' rolling stock) soaking up demand, there is an urgent need to completely rethink the Croydon bottleneck. The project is broken down into four sections: i) East Croydon station, ii) the Selhurst Triangle junction, iii) Norwood Junction and iv) Windmill Bridge. Delivery will be delivered across 2028-33. East Croydon Station
East Croydon is one of the busiest non-terminal stations in the UK, used by nearly 25mn people every year (a further 6mn change trains for services elsewhere), but the design is poorly suited for the demands of the current century with congestion on the ramps up to the small main ticket hall, and just six platforms. An additional two platforms are planned, but to facilitate this, the entire station will be relocated 200m northwards. Construction will be undertaken in phases (with a minimum of five platforms online at any point of time) so that the station can remain open. When completed, East Croydon will have four new wide island platforms, a large new concourse, a new side entrance, two lifts and eight escalators per island platform, two above-platform transfer corridors to aid dispersing passengers, a new piazza and retail.



















Selhurst Triangle
Located to the north of East Croydon, the Selhurst Triangle is the convergence point from the south of the BML and Sutton & Mole Valley Lines and from the north the two branches of the BML heading up to London Victoria and London Bridge. Several dive-unders and fly-overs would be built to replace several present flat-junctions and inadequate fly-overs. By completely grade seperating the lines, overall capacity across the BML will be significantly increased, as will line speeds cutting journey times.







Norwood Junction
The present station will be rebuilt to incorporate two island platforms and two through-running lines for non-stop serices heading to/from London Bridge. I have discussed this project previously in the thread.

Windmill Bridge
Inbetween Selhurst Junction and East Croydon is Windmill Bridge which will need to be replaced to enable more tracks to run through the area.

New Trains
Despite Covid-19, railway passenger use is expected to continue to grow substantially in the coming years, which is necessitating higher-capacity rolling stock. What is now becoming apparent is a blur between what people would identify as commuter and metro rolling stock interiors; namely walk-through carriages, longitudinal seating, increased standing-room only sections. The passenger experience is also experiencing a significant upgrade with WiFi throughout, step-free access, charging points at seats, and underfloor heating. Another positive from the new trains is a focus on energy efficiency, weight reduction (which causes less strain on the tracks) and lower maintenance downtime due to in-built sensors to anticipate problems before they materialise.


Class 701
Due to enter service in May 2021, these are the new high-capacity trains ordered by South Western Trains for commuter routes out of Waterloo. 90 trains of 5-cars have been ordered, but as with most other services, they are able to double up for the peak. Class 710
Part of the Aventra family, 54 units (in 4 or 5-car formation) were acquired for the London Overground to support services on the newly electrified Gospel Oak to Barking Line, Lea Valley Lines, as well as provide additional capacity elsewhere on the London Overground network. Class 717
Much delayed, these are the shorter relatives of the class 700 (seen on the Thameslink route), produced by Siemens, they operate solely on the commuter routes out of Moorgate in 6-car formations. They began service back in Q2 2019.

Class 720
Part of the Greater Anglia fleet update, the class 720 are part of the Aventra train family from Bombardier. The first trains commenced service in November 2020 and operate on the suburban routes out of Liverpool St. 133 units have been ordered (coming in 5-unit formations, which are paired up for peak services). c2c have also ordered 6 class 720’s (10-cars each) which roll out later in 2021. Class 745

Class 800/801/802/803/807/810
Part of the Intercity Express Programme, these are the next-generation of mainline intercity rolling stock to replace the InterCity 125 and InterCity 225’s. Built by Hitachi they come in five varieties, either full-electric or bi-mode, various car-lengths and a top-speed of 201kph. Some 243 train sets/1,547 cars have been ordered across several intercity rail operators as follows:
 800: 34 x 9-car set + 59 x 5-car set GWML
 801: 30 x 9-car set + 12 x 5-car set ECML
 802: 46 x 5-car set + 14 x 9-car set ECML + GWML + TPX

New Tube for London
TfL have officially unveiled their latest deep-level tube rolling stock (this differs from the sub-surface stock by width and heigh) which will incorporate walk-through carriages, wider doors, 20% less energy consumed, regenerative breaking, 10% more capacity (1,076), a top speed of 100kph and for the first time ever on the dee-level tube: air conditioning.

94 nine-car trains are on order from Siemens, with the first trains rolling out on the Piccadilly Line in 2025, which will see a n increase in frequency to 27tph (a train every 135 seconds); which in total equates to a 23% boost in peak capacity. Luton Airport DART
A new people mover is currently being constructed to connect Luton Airport Parkway station on the Midland Main Line with London’s fourth busiest airport. It was also announced that East Midlands Railway will be providing a non-stop service that will run every 30 minutes to St Pancras (journey time of 30 minutes). East Coast Main Line Upgrade
The ECML upgrade is a £1.2bn project to increase capacity and reduce journey times. It incorporates several projects that run the length of the route, including new platforms, grade separation and power supply upgrades. Once finished it will enable for London-to-Edinburgh journey times of under 4hrs and increased train frequencies along the route. King’s Cross + Gasworks Tunnel
Remodelling of the approach into King’s Cross including bringing the third Gasworks Tunnel back into operation to reduce delays on trains approaching/departing the station.





Werrington Dive Under
As part of a plan to reduce freight trains running across the ECML, but avoid closing the line, it was decided – for the first time in the UK - to push a new 155m 11,000 tonne tunnel under the running lines.






East West Rail
EWR is a three-phase project to reintroduce heavy rail service (historically called the Varsity Line) between the two university cities of Oxford and Cambridge and various planned communities planned along the route. It involves reinstalling track (Phase I) from Oxford to Bletchley, upgrading an existing route (Phase II) from Bletchley to Bedford, and a brand-new railway (Phase III) from Bedford to Cambridge. The new orbital rail line would provide connections to several of the UK’s main lines (Great Eastern, West Coast, Midland, East Coast, West Anglia).

The route from Bedford to Cambridge is currently undergoing consultation, but the intention is to have the line depart Bedford from the north and approach Cambridge from the south, with new stations at Tempsford (for the East Coast Main Line) and Cambourne.

A future eastern phase utilising existing railway tracks would tie into Norwich and Ipswich. Cambridge South

Beaulieu Park
Chelmsford is served by a single station on the Great Eastern Main Line which has the honour of the busiest two-platform station in the UK (outside of London). Unfortunately, the station is atop a viaduct and rebuilding would be prohibitively expensive, whilst closure of the GEML untenable. To ease the congestion on Chelmsford, it is proposed that a new station – Beaulieu Park – be built to the north-east, which will ease congestion by c.20% whilst also supporting 14,000 new homes and workspaces for 2,500 new jobs.

Beaulieu Park will have three platforms, passing loops and car park facilities to relieve further congestion in the town. Journey times to London in <40 mins with a projected opening in 2025/26. TfL have secured funding for an exploratory study into an extension of the DLR from Beckton out to Thamesmead. Previous initial studies had looked at a variety of DLR and/or London Overground extensions, but this seems to be the preferred option. London Underground usage regularly reaches 50% of pre-Covid levels

London Underground usage is regularly reaching at least half of pre-pandemic levels, Transport for London (TfL) says.

Demand for the Tube on weekdays is often at 50% of what it was before the coronavirus crisis, and is hitting more than 60% at weekends.

This is up from about 40% across the entire week in early May.

An average of more than 1.8 million journeys are being made on the Tube every weekday.

Last weekend, passenger numbers were at 58% of pre-pandemic levels on Saturday and 62% on Sunday.

Bus travel in the afternoon is also continuing to grow.

London Underground: Nine Elms and Battersea Power Station set to open

Two new London Underground stations are set to open in south London this month.

Construction of Nine Elms and Battersea Power Station, which are both step-free and in zone one, began in 2015. They were originally due to open last year.

Six trains an hour will serve them at peak times when they first open to passengers on 20 September, with the number doubling to 12 an hour in 2022.

The two stations are the first to be added to the Northern Line since Morden opened in 1926.

The vast majority of London Underground's 270 stations are north of the river, with the latest additions taking the south London tally above 30 for the first time.

Network Rail Route Studies
Every so often, Network Rail (the government-owned manager of the majority of the UK’s heavy rail network) undertakes studies to ascertain the current and future use of the railway. As a result, Network Rail are able to put forward solutions to secure funding; these can range from simple level crossing closures to new tunnels, grade separation and other more intensive engineering works.


Oxfordshire Rail Corridor Study
Oxford is less than an hour from Central London, and is by its own right an important city, especially in the knowledge economy and the companies that are spun off the research undertaken at the university. As a growing city and important junction for a variety of routes heading westwards, and the construction of the East West Rail to Cambridge, the station and corridor are in need of expansion work to manage with higher frequencies and passenger volumes. South West Main Line Strategic Study
In a highly focused study, Network Rail have looking at how the South West Main Line (SWML) will cope with future demand, specifically on the Up Fast (UF) line between London Waterloo and Woking which is used by long-distance and outer suburban services. The existing UF operates at 24tph which for a non-automated commuter railway is the absolute maximum possible on existing infrastructure. This setup however comes with a cost: minor deterioration on just a single service impacts all other services for a prolonged period.

Crossrail 2 – if built – would see the SWML increase to 6-tracks, diverting most inner suburban surfaces onto the new tracks and drastically increasing SWML capacity. However, considering the uncertainty of whether Crossrail 2, Network Rail have planned for scenarios where it is/isn’t built. In principle, Network Rail are seeking to reduce existing headways from 150 seconds (24tph) on the UF to as little as 81 seconds (44tph) which to my knowledge is beyond most modern metro systems in line frequency.

Network Rail’s recommendations are:
- Build Crossrail 2
- Deploy European Train Control System (ETCS) automated train control to deliver up to 44tph per track
- Remodelling of the track between London Waterloo and Clapham Yard for non-revenue stock movements, including various options of rebuilding Queenstown Road station to avoid conflict with SWML UF, Up Slow and Windsor Line services
- A new flyover between London Waterloo and Clapham Junction to avoid conflicts at the throat to London Waterloo
- Grade separation of the SWML and the Portsmouth Direct Line to the west of Woking, as well as new platforms at Woking to handle more services

Essex Thameside Route Study
The Essex Thameside Route is focused on the London, Tilbury and Southend Line (LTSL) which consists of a main line (and two branches) out of London Fenchurch Street. The LTSL is one of the most intensely used commuter lines in the UK which creates numerous capacity issues specifically at the following three stations:
- Barking, interchange with the Underground (District and Hammersmith & City Lines) and Overground (Gospel Oak to Barking Line), with lots of interchange traffic on the overbridge
- West Ham, interchange with the Underground (Jubilee Line) and DLR (Stratford International), constricted station site and island platform
- London Fenchurch Street, terminus in the City with just four platforms (the highest train per platform utilisation of any terminus in the UK), there are plans to massively increase concourse capacity, but it would struggle with future

Another major restriction on expansion is that the line is predominantly two-track and the LTSL corridor is expected to see population growth of 30% as redundant industrial land is redeveloped into mixed use sites (e.g Purfleet-on-Thames). Between West Ham and Upminster, the LTSL in effect operates as an express train for the two Underground lines which run parallel, so more tracks is an unlikely proposition.

Going forward, due to the constrained nature of the line, there are realistically three options available, with an end-goal of up to 30tph:
- Converting the route to automated operation using European Train Control System (ETCS) to enable north of 24tph
- Lengthening of trains (all trains running at 12-carriages)
- High standing density (i.e. metro-like) rolling stock

A variety of works will be required, most notably the introduction of ETCS, with the biggest station upgrades occurring at West Ham and Barking stations. London Fenchurch St however could be relocated and dramatically expanded to cope with the demand, I’ll revert back to that separate project below. Great Eastern Main Line Route Study
The mainline heading out of London Liverpool Street, the Great Eastern Main Line (GEML) serves the Eastern region north-east of London, principally by Greater Anglia services. To-date, focus has been on Crossrail (which will serve all stations between Liverpool St and Shenfield, reducing journey times (the Norwich in 90mins project), and a complete overhaul of rolling stock (refer back to an earlier post on Greater Anglia’s new rolling stock).

From Liverpool St, the line is four-track up to Shenfield (where the Shenfield to Southend Line branches off), with the rest of the line being two-track. Even with the aforementioned upgrades, Network Rail envision the GEML up to Colchester (83km north-east down line from Liverpool St) to experience severe capacity issues in the next few years, with capacity issues spreading to other parts of the GEML in the next decade.

To remedy this, Network Rail would include remodelling the tracks to the west of Stratford, 3 or 4-tracking the line from Shenfield to Chelmsford and Ipswich to Haughley Junction, as well as additional passing loops between Chelmsford and Colchester.

On a side note, Stratford which is one of the most important interchanges and one of the busiest stations in London (126mn journeys in 2019) is struggling to cope with daily pressures, with forecasts envisioning the number of entries and exits rising by a further 55mn by 2031. The existing station is rather disjointed and confusing, so 5th Studios have been awarded a contract to see how the station could be rebuilt (much in the vein of London Bridge or Kings Cross St Pancras). East West Rail
Ongoing work to reinstate the old Varsity Line which ran from Oxford to Cambridge. Once complete it will create a new orbital route connecting the Cherwell Valley Line (at Oxford), West Coast Main Line (at Bletchley), Midland Main Line (at Bedford), East Coast Main Line (at St Neots) and the West Anglia Main Line (at Cambridge). The first phase from Oxford to Bedford is due to open in 2023 with the second phase on to Cambridge due sometime after 2025. London Fenchurch Street Station
As noted above in the Essex Thameside Route Study, one of the plans being considered for Fenchurch St is to close the existing terminus and relocate to a new six-platform site opposite the Tower of London. The Weston Williamson + Partners study envisions a new station that provides interchange with the Underground (Circle and District Lines) and opening up land for redevelopment. The project would also incorporate an aspiration of Transport for London to replace the existing Tower Gateway DLR terminus and merge with the Bank DLR branch to create a more intense service. The existing viaduct to Fenchurch St would be converted into a pedestrian walkway with over-station development. Stanford-le-Hope Station

Purfleet-on-Thames Station
Purfleet (to be renamed Purfleet-on-Thames) is a rather forgotten part of Thames river frontage that was dominated by heavy industry and logistics warehouses. It is – like Stanford-le-Hope mentioned above – located on the Tilbury Loop due east of London Fenchurch Street and is seen as a growth area. The local authority intend to redevelop 140 acres to deliver 3,000 new homes, new industrial space, and new film & TV production studio. To facilitate this, the existing station will be relocated to the south-east with the existing level crossing removed and the road redirected over a new bridge. Reigate Station
Reigate is located on a spur off the Brighton Main Line and on the North Downs Line (a west-to-east line orbital line between Reading and Redhill). Network Rail are proposing rebuilding the station to handle 12-car Thameslink trains. Rebuilding Croydon further up the line would enable higher frequencies into London. A crowd of 150 people gathered at 5am to become the first passengers to ride on the Northern line extension from Battersea Power Station.

Some had travelled from as far as York and booked overnight hotel stays to travel on the first Tube extension this century and first on the Northern line for 80 years.

Many were “beside themselves with excitement”, Transport for London commissioner Andy Byford said.

What is causing the UK crisis in petrol supplies?

It is not lack of petrol but a lack of HGV drivers that is hitting supply chains across the country. The shortage is compounded by the need for a separate qualification needed to deliver hazardous substances.

The government is urging people not to panic-buy. The transport secretary, Grant Shapps, said people should “carry on as normal”.The freight and logistics sector have been pleading with the government for months to introduce a temporary immigration waiver for drivers not just in Europe but across the world to help alleviate the shortage.

Logistics UK, which represents freight owners, points out that there are eight different short term work visa schemes for various sectors ranging from farming to sports and religious employees.

Battersea Power Station Northern Line Extension
The two-station Northern Line Extension to Battersea Power Station has now opened. The extension serves the rapidly changing Battersea-Nine Elms-Vauxhall development corridor, and has an initial ‘preview’ service of a train every 10-12 minutes, this frequency will double next year. In the long-term this extension would form the southern terminus of the Charing Cross branch of the Northern Line if it were split. Oxford Street Pedestrianisation
Plans have been unveiled to pedestrianise parts of Oxford Street around Oxford Circus to create two new piazzas and create new entrances to the tube station. These aren’t the first plans and are compared to previous proposals are more conservative in their approach; previous ideas involved closing the majority of Oxford St entirely to all vehicle traffic. It is none the less a major improvement on the existing setup which struggles to cope even with the waves of pedestrians. The original intention was to have a temporary solution by the end of 2021, but this target has now slipped. Barnes Bridge Riverside Path
The majority of the River Thames is accessible to the public on both banks via the 296km long Thames Path. However, at some points access is limited or non-existent. Where the Barnes Railway Bridge crosses the Thames in west London, such a gap exists. Construction has now started on a new route hugging the riverside to rectify this.it is intended for construction to commence on a footpath hugging the riverside.
