Agree on that. Copy/Paste hotel architecture belongs out at the airport.

This one has felt slow to rise. I know it's mostly perception, but still. I'm ready for it to start reshaping that strip of 5th.

I think it's more than just perception. This has been going for quite some time, and isn't nearly as big as Block 71. but it seems to be rising even slower.

Compare this to the Quincy over on Rainey, which started months after, and it's already long past.

This one has definitely taken longer. I think this and Block 71 started roughly around the same period, give or take a couple of months. Block 71 is well on it's way up.

The Quincy and 70 Rainey placed the majority of their parking above ground. I believe the Thompson has most if not all below ground. Makes a difference when considering what you can see and I feel will lead to a much better looking product.

One hundred percent agree. It's a lot easier to look like you are rising from the ground if you start at ground level. If you have to dig down and then fill in the hole, that takes time. But the overall building is better for it.

Compare to Block 71 though, which has the majority underground (or at least had to dig deeper underground than this did).

This is usually factored by the amount of required parking but most importantly the geotechnical make up below the surface

Not much to look at yet, but at least it's above ground now.

It's gonna be fun to watch this one rise after being a hole in the ground for so long.

It feels like this project is a little bit forgotten about.

It's only been forgotten because it's taken so damn long to get going. This project was proposed nearly seven years ago, and construction started 13 months ago. In a little over a year they've only gotten two floors above ground - underground parking takes forever. In a city with so many other major projects going up, it's easy to forget about a middling 300 footer.

I suspect there's just a lot going on in those first 2 floors. It should start to rise faster after them. And it may be short but it's fat and will make a huge impact at the pedestrian level and be an imposing sight from 6th St.
