That Tubular Rail is so interesting (I'm guessing it can't handle any vertical or horizontal curves, and just runs in a straight shot?). Is it in development in any specific place right now?

Why not San Antonio? Castro keeps talking about making the city world-class and "the next great American city." Why not have some revolutionary technology to back that up? Now that I think of it, it'd be great for the San Antonio/Austin commuter rail, takes the whole issue of moving current Union Pacific-owned rail out of the picture.

Um... if it doesn't handle curvature, it would not be time efficient in any way (let alone competitive with more traditional transportation options).

Fail.

It would be a big bonus to SA to have one. Wouldnt mind coming home for vactions and bein able to ride it once or twice. Phoenix just completed their own version and its not bad. The construction of course sucked, but now every city in top ten of population has one except SA.

Nice find Alice, still gonna be sad to see Terminal 2 go. It's by far my favorite terminal, and has so much history/Character.

Mexicana Airline To Suspend Flights To San Antonio

Mexicana Airline To Suspend Flights To San Antonio
Flight 830/831 To Mexico City Affected

POSTED: Monday, August 9, 2010
UPDATED: 9:04 am CDT August 9, 2010

MEXICO CITY -- Mexico's troubled Mexicana airline has announced a cutback in operations, including dropping two flights in San Antonio, saying its financial situation has "seriously deteriorated in recent days" since it filed for bankruptcy protection.

The airline's website listed 13 flights as suspended starting Monday, with two more suspended beginning Tuesday and Wednesday. Among the flights include Flight 830/831 from Mexico City to San Antonio. Other affected flights include Chicago, Montreal, Madrid, London and cities in Central and South America.

Mexico's largest air carrier suspended ticket sales Wednesday but said it would continue operating flights for travelers who already bought them. It did not say, however, how long it would continue honoring such tickets.

Mexicana filed for bankruptcy protection in Mexico and the United States on Aug. 2 while it seeks to restructure its costs. The airline has said it owes Mexican banks at least $199 million, although it hasn't revealed its total debt.

Mexicana filed for bankruptcy protection after unions rejected its demand they accept pay cuts of 41 percent for pilots and 39 percent for flight attendants, along with a 40 percent cut in employee numbers. Mexicana insists both are needed to keep the company afloat.

Labor leaders say pilots and attendants already accepted wage reductions and gave up some benefits in 2006, saving Mexicana around $48 million a year. They blame poor management for the company's financial woes.

Before the suspension of flights, Mexicana had 220 daily flights to 65 cities, almost all of them in foreign countries. It carried 11.1 million passengers last year.

The company that owns Mexicana also has two separate domestic airlines, Click and Link, which fly routes only inside Mexico and are not affected by the bankruptcy filing.

Not yet. Construction is still about a month away, they're just taking soil samples right now.

Fingers crossed that a certain someone doesn't screw this up at the last minute...

While the new terminal is only seven gates (same as the existing terminal 2), its still going to make SAT look and feel like a whole new airport. Since airports are often the first and last impression of out-of-towners and buisness people, the new terminal will should an effect exponential to its actual footprint.

^ Starting to believe that it is a mock-up and not a real indication of the look of BRT...

All of the new bus livery has been more subdued, with the grey buses with only slight brushes of color. Surely they wouldn't do this to us...

Premier bike study starts in San Antonio

An out-of-state research firm launched a study of the riding habits of bicyclists in San Antonio by inviting them to one of the most dangerous places in the city to ride: Loop 410 near U.S. 281.
On Tuesday, ETC Institute started to hand out GPS units to more than 100 local cyclists from a ballroom at the Holiday Inn near the San Antonio International Airport. The GPS devices will track the bicyclists' movements for a week.

But getting to the hotel parking lot was a risky venture for even the most experienced cyclist.

When this was pointed out to the firm's staff, they responded: drive.

The hotel lot is off the north access road of Loop 410. So cyclists had to choose between competing for space with highway-speed traffic on the one-way road or jumping over a three-foot-high security gate and landscaped median dividing the back of the hotel's parking lot from an adjacent alley.

According to Chris Tatham, vice president of ETC, based in Olathe, Kansas, the hotel was selected precisely because it is an awful place to ride a bike.

“If we were to meet at a park or something, people might say, ‘Hey, this is pretty good place,' and then when we look at our data we would say, ‘Wow, this is the bicycling hot spot of the city,'” he said.

An attractive place would have changed bicyclists' riding patterns because they would be tempted to return there and skew the results, he said.

The firm has conducted dozens of vehicle studies for the Texas Department of Transportation, Tatham said, but a bicycle use study “is kind of new.”

Several people who volunteered for the study rode their bikes to the GPS pick-up point regardless of the danger because they do not have cars or simply choose to travel by bike.

Tatham said those riders would not affect the results because the data collection will officially start the day after they picked up the device, housed inside an empty water bottle that can be attached to a bike.

“I just don't like driving,” said Suzanne Daube, who ended up driving to the hotel because she and her boyfriend couldn't figure out a safe way to ride there on their bikes.

Jari O'Connor, a recreational bicyclist who also came by car, said she's nervous even driving to the location, let alone riding there.

The point of the study, which also involves phone and online surveys, is to make a statistically valid estimate of how many people ride in San Antonio and what obstacles prevent them from riding more or riding at all.

“This will provide us a benchmark from which to plan future bike projects and a baseline to measure future successes,” said Scott Ericksen, spokesman for the Metropolitan Planning Organization, which is sponsoring the $80,000 study, due in October. When told about the GPS distribution point, Ericksen laughed.
