Nothing fantastic, but still pretty solid. This will be a big bonus for East Village.

Rumors keep popping up that it will be starting soon. Anxious to see this one go ahead.

There is some activity (site trailer and fencing) where the old building was torn down a few months back. I suspect the parking lot will remain in operation for the rest of March, and that (hopefully) we will see activity start up in April.

Somebody mentioned in the Calgary construction thread that the parking lot is now closed and heavy equipment is being rolled onto site.

I already posted about that, hence the photo above. The digging has absolutely nothing to do with the hotel, as I said. It has to do with moving power lines in preparation for the Library and the hotel. It's not excavation or anything to do with construction. They have been there for weeks.

Well then that is excellent. It certainly isn't a very nice building, but the presence it will have and the large impact on the east village will be undeniable. I love that it is fronting along the "historic" street on 8th Ave, which is also the end of 'The Riff', and on 7th Ave.

It has been mentioned in the Calgary section before, but I wonder if the city is going to attempt to connect The Riff and Stephen Avenue through City Hall and the Central Library? and if so, how are they going to bridge it over the LRT tracks? Is the Central Library going to have an entrance on the east side of the tracks as well, at the end of The Riff?

Rumour I heard was that the library was going to have some kind of above-ground connection (more than just a +15, a genuine attempt to improve connectivity between East Village and downtown) through city hall.

It would make total sense to connect the Riff to Stephen Ave. My own personal opinion is that the building of city hall with it's massive back facing East Village kind of blocked out that community and helped drive it downward until finally hitting rock bottom. I really hope they can see the potential of connecting Stephen Ave to EV.

Well here's hoping they will connect it. The idea and possibility is certainly there. If the city can re-vitalize the street interaction of the Nuclear Bunker... I mean the Glenbow Museum... they can certainly do it with City Hall.

Slightly better exterior than the one they built in Hamilton, but nothing worth writing home about.

For the most part it's pretty average. Most of us are exited about it for its location more than the design.

Haha you can say that again, and twice for the part about being nicer than the one in the Hammer But as Surreal said, it's more about the excellent use of a hard-to-use location, boxed in on two sides by LRT tracks and nestled against a very historic hotel building, right at the end of what will one day be one of Calgary's most important activity areas, the Riff.

The added activity the hotel will bring to the area will be good too.
