July 25-28, 2013

This week we were fortunate enough to host Denscity in St. John's. He's from Castlegar/Vancouver on Canada's west coast. Rome is closer to St. John's than is Vancouver - so he was a long way from home. This was the tour we took him on.

We started with a trip to Cape Spear, the most easterly point in North America. Looking back at St. John's from Shea Heights, on the way to the Cape:

At the Cape:

The Cape Spear Lighthouse, the oldest surviving lighthouse in Newfoundland.

The Cape:

The new lighthouse at Cape Spear:

This photographer came prepared with a step ladder.

A remnant of a same-sex wedding in the village of Petty Harbour.

Petty Harbour.

The Battery neighbourhood of St. John's.

The canons guarding the entrance to St. John's.

Swimmers enjoying a balmy summer day.

Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove.

Our new buildings, Fortis Place and 351, under construction.

Old St. John's.

Gower Street.

Houses in St. John's often have more than one ground level.

Shorts/skirts and high necklines are all the rage in St. John's this year.

The Catholics like to keep an eye on everything.

The little lanes of St. John's.

The newly-reclad TD Place on Duckworth Street.

The tourist season is in full swing. It's now a billion-dollar industry for us - not bad for a small city that's not tropical and very expensive to visit.

George Street is a great place for people watching.

We explored some fire escapes that we probably shouldn't have.

Kimberly Row.

The spirit of the city.

The final day of Denscity's visit was a miserable one - foggy and very cold.

St. John's.

Quidi Vidi.

^ Great shots man. It actually seems prettier looking at your photos than when I was there standing next to you.

Those are some very nice photos, including the Republic of Doyle house.
Just wondering, why does a T-shirt say "Republic of 1949"?

It says Newfoundland. Just has a big 1949 in the middle.

^ Yes I could see that, but it wasn't a republic, even in 1949, it was a dominion.

Edit: I decided to edit this post as it was too O.T.

But it's nice to have more comments in these photo threads so they don't take so long to load.

AWESOME pictures!! I have missed your photos and construction updates very much-ly over the past few weeks. It was the only thing that kept this thread alive..

We really need some new developments to talk about because the St. John's section has been dead lately. Who know's, maybe there will be more after the election.. (off topic, sorry)

But amazing pictures! I really enjoyed them

I have to say TD place looks a lot better in person than it does in pictures. I like it

Today was a beautiful summer Sunday in St. John's. Just perfect! jeddy1989 and I spent the day downtown.

Water Street East:

The buskers were out in full force entertaining the crowds.

Soloman's Lane. St. John's has lots of pedestrian-only lanes that are staircases.

The harbour apron, just off Harbour Drive.

Water Street again.

The Bowring Downtown Centre re-clad in progress.

Posing for pictures.

Hotties.

Scotia Plaza, a popular place for buskers.

Old St. John's.

Cochrane Street.

My car by a small waterfall on Southside Road.

My street from my roof.

Prescott Street.

What is going on with the Bowring Centre, which was already re-clad a few years ago?

I have no idea. But they painted the rest of it a sort of mocha colour (I feel really gay saying that, but it's not quite a brown, or a white. Kind of in between the two, ). The bricks on the front appear to be staying, so...

Thanks, when I said a few years ago I actually meant (probably) a couple of decades ago.
Is the TD building mocha?
