I love SHoP's work, and the low-rises are true to form (re: great), but the tower is a bit underwhelming.

That makes a lot of sense. The tower's not bad, just not up to SHoP standards. Now, if they continue the brass/gold/corten mullion elements in the tower, that might elevate it a bit. They seem to be there in one render, but not the more detailed one.

Love the base of 400 King West. Is that new, or a building that already exists?

It's a decent enough project but I find it way to conservative for that stretch of Yonge which is better suited to a sense of glitz and sparkle rather than clean, restrained and inoffensive.
Now this (right side) on the other hand would have been perfect for the Yonge site while the restrained Teahouse design would fit well with Yorkville. It's almost like someone dropped some paper file folders containing the designs for each site and accidentally put the designs in each other's file.

Teahouse looks awful and is an awful project where it's located on Yonge....it fits better in North York then a prominent site on downtown Yonge street.
