It would have been better if you left it at the top of the list where it will appear without any numbers and kept your disclaimer in place about next week's release date. I know it sounds trivial but you'd be surprise how many people don't know the facts of which is the largest city, metro (msa/csa), etc... and see a posting like this and then, in a casual conversation, say dumb things like, "Chicago has more people...I saw NYC on a list as third, etc..."

New England growth.

I am very impressed with the growth in New England. My city of Manchester grew to 109,565 and Boston's numbers are impressive. Even Burlington Vermont. Can't wait to see Maine's numbers.

^^Wouldnt that same potential idiot still assume Chicago is larger, since it's population number would be larger than the incomplete NY figure? It's so thoughtless to compile information without keeping them in mind

Anyway, I worked for the census in North Brooklyn last year and can attest it was a s***show, with many incomplete surveys, a low response rate, and actually had issues with surveyors falsifying surveys, to the point many had to be redone. Other parts of the city fared better, and in my personal experience Latin immigrants were far more cooperative in offering information on themselves and neighbors, compared to Hassidim community in South Williamsburg.

It is about 48 miles northwest of Austin, yes, but practically everything between the two cities that is developable has been developed already. The Texas Hill Country is much more rugged than people outside know.

Austin will sprawl out towards Johnson City and Dripping Springs eventually (where the hills are more rolling) and certainly in the other way towards Bastrop and Elgin (where the land is flat). Even if you look at the CAPCOG projections, Burnet County and Llano County (Granite Shoals, Kingsland) both remain about the same as they are today.

As a census worker for San Antonio, I can attest to a totally different picture. As a census worker I can also say to the other census worker: "shut up". Do you want to be tried for breaking privacy law?

Local press covered the disorganization of this specific office in detail last year, it led to the firing of the manager and other people in supervisory positions. All public knowledge.

Declined in red, newly added in bold, numbers in red mean that that city's relative placement has declined since 2000, numbers in bold are new additions from 2000.

I want to point out that Tucson was estimated to have passed 1,000,000 in 2009, but the 2010 census showed otherwise.
New York City, Buffalo, and Rochester are now the only metropolitan statistical areas outstanding. Rochester and Buffalo will almost surely be below Salt Lake City, and New York City is (and will be for the foreseeable future) number 1.

Unbelievable number by Detroit. I can't believe it is now smaller than Austin or Jacksonville. That would be unconjecturable 30 years ago.

And it is hard to claim undercount as the reason it is now smaller than Austin. It would be incredibly stupid to think they undercounted Detroit and counted Austin perfectly. In fact I think it is safe to assume that most cities of the same size probably get undercounted to the same extent. In fact I think a rapidly growing city like Austin or Las Vegas might be more likely to get undercounted due to the transient nature of the people there (i.e. they move there, find a roommate, find an apartment, then maybe get a house).

Should Detroit just be abandoned?

I remember seeing an architecture lecture about how Detroit is deconstructing itself. I thought they were just be philosophical but, man, maybe they are right.

One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs

^ I wonder how bad it will get. It could possibly lose about 80% of it's peak population by 2050 if not more. Can anyone recall any major city outside the rust belt where it thing got this bad or even worse?

Lot's of cities throughout history have been abandoned. Not saying that Detroit will be but has happened quite often.
