It's a little unfair to lump Austin (a metro of 2.2 million) in with Dallas-Ft. Worth (8 million) and Houston (7.2 million). Obviously, market forces are going to drive architecture differently in the much larger metropolises.

But Austin is building a lot of new towers, and sadly, they're all really lame.

I guess each to their own. But Austin does have some towers that are eye catching. Block 185 and Block 71 are a few that will stand out from the rest.

Interesting how the entire development has a decidedly futuristic/modern aesthetic, while the entrance to the theater brings in some very clear art deco references with that massing, but using the modern materials. Don't get me wrong, I like it, but it's a curious choice.

Personally, I'm not thrilled with the rounded corners and edges...they remind me of 1970s futurism à la "Houston Center." https://twitter.com/PresHou/status/7...250411520?s=20

I'm also REALLY not thrilled that the project is being downgraded. I suppose I should be used to it.

Groundbreaking scheduled for retail piece of Allen Parkway mixed-use project

Quote:
Developers behind The Allen, a high-end mixed-use development planned for a 6-acre tract off Allen Parkway, have announced an official groundbreaking date for the first phase of the retail portion of the project.

While crews are already working to excavate the site, Houston-based DC Partners has scheduled a groundbreaking ceremony for Nov. 6. The ceremony will celebrate the start of construction on The Allen's Pavilion portion, which will offer space for retail and dining establishments.

The Pavilion will be one of the key amenities at the $454 million development.

Allen Parkway hotel and condo tower breaks ground

Quote:
Construction has started on the first phase of The Allen, a six-acre development next to the Federal Reserve building along Allen Parkway.

Contractor G.T. Leach is under way on a 34-story hotel/condominium tower and adjacent retail pavilion that will be part of the overall project planned to include an office tower, upscale apartments and greenspace.
