Sorry to sour the mood but this is just dreadful. Who knew such a paper-thin building could be so nauseating in more ways than I can count. Usually I find view corridors a goofy thing to get worked up over but I can only describe this thing's effect on looking north from somewhere like Madison Square Park as a gut punch. The setback from 5th Ave is careless; the fact that the side of the building facing the street is an 800ft tall wall of cold opaque metal is downright malicious. And all this for... hang on, that can't be right... 26 UNITS? There are 3 story buildings with more apartments than that. Well gee, thank god for those 26 investors. I was afraid NYC's fragile tax base was set to irreparably shatter without them. This building just oozes contempt for everyone who walks past it. They could hardly have designed a more disrespectful building for this site if they tried.

Awful, awful, awful.

Yep should have put it across the street at least . Now with the rezoning expect shitty towers like this to be going up.

Yes taller towers will come but as many views as possible of the ESB should be protected as it's the jewel in the skyline. I hope in ten or so years they consider what they were going to do when the Twin Towers were being built.

Oh please. New Yorkers barely notice this building, if at all. (Most don't, and won't, because most don't hang out in Madison Square looking for views of the Empire State when you can see it just about everywhere else).

This is the perfect project to illustrate the polarity of opinions on this forum -

Some people hate this project because it's a glaring symbol of vanity, ruining sightlines and wasting air rights just so that a handful of wealthy people can buy overpriced condos they won't actually live in

Some people love this project because *tall shiny building*

What a website...

There are no wasted air rights, something isn't overpriced if the open market determines its price, and any tall building, by definition, displays some degree of vanity and ruins someone's sightlines.

I'm also never clear why people speculate on the relative usage. How is this relevant? The eventual buyers contribute the exact same in city property, mansion and transfer taxes whether they're permanent shut-ins or never set foot in the property.

270 Park is not residential, it’s office. It is meant to be the corporate HQ of JPMorgan Chase upon completion. This is a signature, landmark tower designed to project one company’s image to the world, just like countless other famous New York skyscrapers.

Imagine that. People on a skyscraper forum liking a tall building.

Let's be clear. 99.99 % of New Yorkers don't even know what this building is, and won't have their view blocked by it. Who's hanging out on the couple of blocks where the "sightlines" are blocked? Not the average New Yorker, that's for sure. But if they're worried about this superthin skyscraper blocking the view of the Empire State, they're in for a world of hurt.

Huh, just realized this is the first time I am ever seeing it from the actual Empire State Building!

Unfortunately it somewhat blocks the view or damages the view from the Flatiron of the ESB.

Yeah that one is pretty unfortunate actually, I feel like a building that tops out at the same height as the lowest ESB observation level kinda changes the whole vibe of being up there. I am glad I got to go up there before it was built (and also up to the top of One Vanderbilt before 270 Park) but I hope to go back soon to see the view with the new additions to the skyline!

"Somewhat"?? It almost completely blocks it, that iconic view is not just somewhat damaged, it's utterly ruined/destroyed.

The view is enhanced, obviously. It's a very skinny tower, with not even 10% of the volume of the ESB. It isn't the first nor will it be the last of first of many slivers in that general area.

Just silly NIMBYism, as if we can't build anything in Midtown anymore, not even super skinny slivers, just bc an iconic building was built 100 years ago. If the NIMBYs were around back then, there wouldn't even be an ESB to protect, as ESB replaced the gorgeous original Waldorf Astoria.
