Atlanta's not moving. The teams attendance is picking up again now that they have a decent team, and the ownership battles are over.(they had good attendance before the latest ownership fight and when they had a decent lineup). They are locked into a 10 year lease, and the current owner believes the team can be profitable in Atlanta.
If I'm not mistaken ASG owns Phillips Arena and does not want the team to continue playing in it, I'm sure they will be more than happy to cut the lease and book the arena for more money making options like hosting more lil john and Bieber concerts.

Winnipeg Winterknights (a riffing off of the Atlanta Knights tradition)

^^They own rights to the arena, not the building... Like the (Oilers) Katz group will own the rights to the new Edmonton arena, but not own it (The city of Edmonton will own it) The new arena in Edmonton will see the Oilers locked in for 35 years, similar to how the thrashers have been locked in for 10 years in Atlanta.

ATLANTA - It's another frustrating day for hockey fans in Atlanta and Winnipeg with conflicting reports over the fate of the Thrashers NHL franchise.

The Hockey News is reporting that it's a done deal: The Atlanta Thrashers NHL franchise is moving to Winnipeg, Manitoba.

According to The Hockey News, the Atlanta Spirit Group has reached a $170 million deal with True North Sports & Entertainment and the NHL. The purchase price for the Thrashers franchise was $110 million. A $60 million relocation fee was added to the deal.

TIMELINE: The Atlanta Thrashers Saga
But the Atlanta Thrashers organization says, not so fast.

Thrashers President Don Waddell said Wednesday that the deal with True North Sports & Entertainment is "still a work in progress" and refuted The Hockey News report.

The deal between the Atlanta Spirit Group and True North Sports and Entertainment has not been without controversy and internal strife, a source close to the group told 11Alive News.

Last year, the Atlanta Spirit Group was approached by a group of investors led by former NHL player Anson Carter (@AnsonCarterLA), the source told 11Alive's Matt Pearl (@MattPearlWXIA11) on the condition of anonymity.

The group led by Carter made a preliminary, non-binding offered to buy the Atlanta Thrashers, The Atlanta Hawks and the rights to Philips Arena from Atlanta Spirit. The group intended to keep the Thrashers in Atlanta and had serious financial backing, Pearl's source said.

That offer was never put through due diligence by the Atlanta Spirit Group, the source told Pearl.

11Alive News has made several attempts to contact Carter. So far, he has not responded.

Pearl's source went on to detail a rift between the Atlanta Spirit investors. Some of the investors preferred to keep all three assets, the Thrashers, Hawks and Philips together. Others within the group were inclined to sell the financially under-performing Thrashers and maintain ownership of the Hawks and operating rights to Philips Arena.

So True North is willing to pay 180 Million Dollars for a team, that on the books, is probably worth about 90 million dollars, if even.

Straight from the ownership of Atlanta Thrasher's mouth

Earlier today, I spent about an hour in a one-on-one conversation with Atlanta Thrashers co-owner, Michael Gearon - getting his side of the story on how exactly we’ve gotten to this point in the whole “Thrashers relocation saga.” It was his side of the story, mind you. But there was no pretending that there was still a chance the team would remain. It’s not going to happen. In fact, he offered that the deal to sell the Thrashers is “about 80-percent complete.” However, an announcement may not come until next week – maybe. Gearon said that there are still mounds of paperwork to take care of.

Would that 60 million relocation fee include the Jets name being issued to the TNSE as the name of the team. I guess we'll have to see.

Boy this is taking long......

People, enough with the gloating, the egging, and the non-productive hyperbole. Let's keep this thread above the belt.

Lawyers would actually be figuring out all the hard things about moving a business from the U.S. to Canada, which will likely involve layoffs under Georgia law, possibly the breach of various contracts and leases, dealing with creditors, pension issues, immigration issues, decisions about tax implications of various transaction structures and payment arrangements, negotiations relating to bank financing, potentially trademark and other IP issues, and everything else involved in doing a rather unusual type of $175 million transaction involving multiple parties. That's what we get paid for. Without lawyers, no Jets.
