I am fully in favor of harsher sentencing for violent crimes (especially owning or discharging illegal guns), but I wouldn't be surprised if some of the opposition is motivated by CPD's reputation for planting drugs / guns.

Ok TUP I'm going to go there again.

I listened to WGN radio midday for almost 45 minutes with a local political expert. I can't recall his name but he is on TV twice a week for 30 mins every week.

So it was said there was no way Rahm would quit being Mayor if he knew HQ2 was coming to Chicago for it would have been a major win and lever to go to a higher level of politics, Like the insane POTUS option.

But it did come out as a million to one that Rahm could or will coordinate and become part and join the Amazon team move and make millions doing so if it did come to Chicago.

IMO 99% he got bad news but there is that 1% chance he is going to be working for Amazon someday working out of Chicago.

I know it is an outlandish idea but it did come up on the radio that if he was going to want to be an instant multi millionaire that is one way to go about it.

I doubted the premise because Rahm would have hinted as such and not broke down weeping otherwise.

But the idea was put out there on WGN by a political procrastinator that offered a long shot idea. I personally do not believe this for one iota, but no one in the know, knows why he chose to drop out at this time other than he has bigger options out there. Its a weird time to do it politically.

Making real Money could be one of them but dropping out now prevents him from the chance to run for the POTUS unless the crazy option suggested is really a chance.

Again I did not come upon this theory by myself. I was just listening to WGN radio and wanted to share this tidbit.

And yes I am over the board obsessed on this HQ2 thing and I admit it. But if it happens you heard it here first.

it's amazing that it needs to be said, NYC solved crime by making it someone else's problem, that's the Chicago plan too, it's just taking longer

Maybe instead of roughing people up, CPD could drive people to Dallas or Nashville and drop them off.

Why would CPD need to drive them? People are going on their own

The difference is crime got priced out of NYC (involuntary relocation) and people in Chicago's worst neighborhoods are leaving by choice. That is likely why the process is much slower.

I have a hard time believing that's all it is. Percentage wise, NYC has just as many poor people as Chicago, and I don't think the number has really gone down that much over time, even with the extreme gentrification of Manhattan and the western part of Brooklyn.

As has been said here before: kicked all the poors out, problem solved.

To be more nuanced about it, the solution was a combination of gentrification and harsher sentencing. They also engaged in some very controversial practices like racial profiling during stops. At the end of the day it's not as simple as "all the poor people are gone" because that's not true, it's a matter of "enough of the poor people left and were replaced by non-poor residents who don't tolerate crime and cooperate with police".

If half of Englewood was suddenly occupied by yuppies, you bet the murder problem would evaporate even if everyone living there now stayed. Why? Because the yuppies would call the police over and over again on any obnoxious gang party houses or report exactly what they saw to police when shots were fired. This is what happens in gentrifying areas that tamps down on crime. I saw it happen on my own street in Logan Square were a bunch of neighbors got a trouble maker arrested and then got his parents house cracked down on by the buildings department until they were forced to move.

It's not as simple as poor or rich.

Poor immigrants are far, far less likely to commit violent crime and be involved in gangland drug trade than lower income people from minority communities who became Americanized or were born in America.

It's a simple fact that the "American way of thinking" (I want an easy life, I want to enjoy myself and get rich quick, and I don't want to take shit from nobody) doesn't work as well if you're poor. It has a much higher likelihood of landing you in trouble.

Chicago has lately had far less immigration, while immigration in droves continues in New York City. I'd love to see that change (and I think it can and potentially will), but the powers that be don't seem that interested in marketing Chicago more aggressively to international markets.

Or Rauner can discuss those plans at the debate that JB Pritzker refuses to participate in...

I wonder if Prekwinkle will run. I used to like her, but she morphed in Stroger.

I would also say yes.

Wonder what Rahm will do next. Maybe we should start a rumor just to piss off the Atlanta forum. Rumor is that Rahm will spearhead the new Amazon HQ2 as CEO of the new headquarters after completing his term.
