Toronto is at 12 murders, up from 5 this time last year.

Chicago is at 85 murders, which is nearly two per day. They've had twice as many murders as they had at this time last year.

Toronto shootings are up 70% this year over last year. Apparently the Ferguson effect has crossed the border.

SF is at 4, after two people were killed in a triple shooting on twin peaks. That's down from 12 at this time last year.

Oakland is at 5, compared to 14 at this time last year.

San Jose is at 6, compared to 4 at this time last year.

Spike in Toronto gun violence sparks questions

Quote:
“It could just be that something else is happening in these neighbourhoods where there’s a culture emerging, where people feel helpless,” Mr. Lee said.

In a year-end interview with CTV, Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders also tied the change to police practices, using different logic. He said the spike is a “complex question,” but he believes criminals have been emboldened by the curtailment of the force’s carding policy, which allowed officers to approach people and gather their personal information even when they weren’t suspected of a crime.
Quote:
“Informants, wiretapped information and agents have told us that the criminal elements understand that police are not approaching them, so they feel safer carrying firearms,” the chief said.

That's nearly one per day. Pretty shocking for a Canadian city.

Not really. Montreal had multiple shootings a day and over 100 homicides in the 70s-80s.

If were talking lately, you're right.

Chicago needs to get this out of control before it spirals back to what it was in the 90s... 2 homicides a day is ridiculous.

86 homicides according to the tribune counter... 57 in January 29 in Feb so far

Actually, we don't have to go that far back. In the late 90s in the biker wars, in Quebec resulted in more than 160 murders in about 8 years. Starting in Oct. 1994. Most of those were in Montreal but Québec City's murder rate skyrocketed.

For the record, 0 murders in Québec City and Lévis.

True. However by the times this biker war started in the mid 90's, Montreal's overall homicide rate had already began its downward trend that has continued till today. Still no homicides this year in Montreal as well.

True. But for Québec City it represented a significant spike in the long term downward trend.

Also, how weird is it for Montreal to go 56 days without a murder?

30 would indicate one every 12 or 13 days. Obviously, there is always clustering but currently Montreal is the anti-Toronto.

Last year (2015), March 11 to May 17 saw one murder on April 7, which is a period of 67 days. So, if this continues to March 4, it will start to become very exceptional.

August 3, 2014 - Nov. 6, 2014 - 1 murder. More than 60 days, again.
March 18 - May 16, 2014 - 59 days without a murder.

Not as exceptional as I would have thought.

I have found an even longer gap in 2013, Feb 2, 2013 - April 12, 2013 - 68 days.

Why would the Ferguson effect have an impact in Toronto? I don't get it.

Yeah, Montreal is the ultimate "cluster" murder city. I wish the streak we're on right now continues but according to the murder gaps in your post (60+-days) we're due for one soon...

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the entire province of Quebec (8.2M people) is only at 1 murder since January 1st.
