^ That would look horrible in DT. It looks horrible in Century City. It reminds me of those numerous 1980's condo towers in the Wilshire Corridor. Like The Californian, The Diplomat, The Westwood, The Mirabella, La Tour, Park Wilshire, The Wilshire, Wilshire House, Regency Wilshire. I love those towers though. I love LA architecture circa 1985-1989. The Century would look perfect among those towers.

^ I think it would look out of place in that sea of corporate boxes. But what LAB is saying is that The Century would've brought a touch of class and sophistication to Bunker Hill, combining luxury living with culture.

Bunker Hill deserves something more dramatic, anyways.

Why do you say that? Is there something about this place or hood?

Some photos from this weekend (9/21):

Broad view of Century City.

The Century up close. Looks like they've got another 8 to 10 floors left?

I'm assuming the building under construction is the Beverly West Condos building. Is that correct?

Nice shots, friedpez. It looks like the Century has reached it's first setback on the crown.

according to this article-
http://www.latimes.com/business/la-f...,4757492.story

the Wilshire Center residential project is toast and being replaced with retail-

From this:
http://www.gerdingedlen.com/project.php?id=44

To this:

From the Times article-

"I'm a mad optimist," said Snyder, who bought the property at the southeast corner of the intersection after another developer scratched plans for a large-scale condominium project there as the housing market cooled.

He hopes to begin work on the $200-million vertical mall next year and finish by 2011. Financing is lined up, Snyder said, although there remains a chance that the current financial market turmoil could affect his lenders.

^^^At least its vertical. But damn I really liked those condo towers. LA doesn't need any more Beverly Centers.

You dont often see movie theaters atop eleven stories of above-ground parking.

Just hope the architecture is good.

Wilshire and Vermont Mall Rendered: Where Is the Vertical?

By Dakota
September 25, 2008

This morning, the LA Times hyped the vertical portion of the mall in
its story about that new mall
coming to Vermont and Wilshire, but uhm, now it's not looking that ground-breaking. Nor does one feel like they are in Asia, home of those futuristic vertical malls. Via Racked LA, two renderings of the planned 7-story mall that'll go up on the site of that planned--and now canceled--mixed-use housing project. And this $200 million project still could have housing, according to the Times, which notes the development will be done by 2011. In the close-ups of the renderings, the store names are variations of Prada and Gucci, so we're not betting a Target is headed here.

^ It would be great if it were built in Downtown instead, perhaps replacing that hideous car wash across from LA Live?

Thats just what I was about to say. Much better location. Unfortunately, these 7 story malls tend to only work in super dense places like the Time Warner Center in Manhattan. Look what happened to the one in Hollywood. Whats good about this is that unlike the Grove, it's accessible by roads. I also like that it has that huge atrium with a glass ceiling so people can sit down on a bench nearby to relax.

Though I wonder what is going to go on the eighth floor, because that cut away view of the mall suggests that there are 8 levels (not counting the underground parking).

Without a crowded city, this really isnt necessary. People would rather stroll outside at the Grove or Americana than be stuck in a mall like this. Specifically, that corner isn't quite high-density enough.

Siam Square in Bangkok works because there are several important transit lines converging there, it's the center of activity, and there are several different attractions.
