That might be the worst abortion of an addition to a building I have ever seen. They also are ruining the continuity of the granite pillars that stream to the top. Is there anyway we can block this or lobby the Alderman to change their mind? This is depressing

Oy vey, I didn't get to see these renders of the exterior elevator. Not exactly elegant, or forgiving to Aon's facade. Glad its not parkside, but that ugly thing instead will be visible to the rest of the city.

I was hoping for something a lot more passive, maybe fitting in the negative space in the northwest corner of the tower, complementing the vertical lines with something more fluid and elliptical. This just looks obtuse as hell...

And add about 12’ to the building because of the new elevator overrun

Actually, the plans we saw at the meeting last night (save perhaps for the ride on the roof of the building) were pretty subdued and classy overall, to be honest with you. The SE entry looks quite nice, being fairly simple in its architecture but still striking, playing nicely off of the tower itself. The interior of the observation level is done really well, too. Some people I'm sure will have issues with the removal of 2 out of every three of the stone columns on the top of the tower to allow for much better viewing, but by keeping 1 out of every three columns in place it still allows for the overall aesthetics to remain, so that's a plus for me. The glass elevator is placed on the NW corner to minimize the impact to the skyline from the "important" angles, being from Millennium Park as well as the lakefront, so that's another big plus. Overall, I think the proposal makes a lot of sense. Not to mention, the location of AON makes an observation deck there absolutely a must-visit because of the amazing and vastly different views seen from all sides of the tower. This will have the greatest views in the city, bar-none, followed by Hancock, then Sears.

It was mentioned during the presentation last night, actually. The answer is 'no', because of the complete recladding the tower had done in the 1980's going from marble to granite. That prevents it from being considered for official landmark status, though the tower's owners along with the architects of this proposal have made sure to include the landmarks designation group in their design discussions to make sure they were at least generally on-board with the changes that are to be made.

I would not call this keeping the overall aesthetics. This completely botches the monolithic look the Aon center has been known for imo. I actually don't mind the elevator itself. The base is actually pretty nice.. I'll even take the Vegas ride if they'd move it to another side. But Changing the look of the building has me so not on board with this. I hope it doesn't happen.

What the f*ck?

On the bright side I think it adds a few feet to the building height

I've always loved this building and this is kind of terrible. Chicago already has enough high observatories.

That's not true at all. Nothing in the city's landmarking criteria prevents designation of a building that's undergone repairs, even repairs using a different material.

I don't know, Steely. I'm actually not really sure what the enormous issue is about the top couple of floors having some of the stone removed for improved visibility for observatory visitors. Sure, I agree that it does, of course, deviate from the pure monolithic look of Aon in it's current form, but it's only the top 30' or so of a 1000+' tower.

Of course, I'm looking at this as a relative outsider, since I'm not a native Chicagoan. I just don't see why so many people are so upset at these changes.

I guess when I think of HORRIBLE design, this isn't what comes to mind. If Aon were proposed to be reclad in glass or metal, well THAT would be horrible, since it changes everything about the aesthetics. Adding a huge crown would change things dramatically, of course. Making some "relatively" small changes to the top 2 floors isn't an enormous game-changer, at least in my humble opinion, for whatever that's worth.

And besides, the view from up there is absolutely, without a doubt, spectacular!

I couldn't disagree with you more on this issue(in a respectable manner).

The removal of the top few floors of continuity kills the building's aesthetic entirely. The glass elevator is gaudy and doesn't even make a half-assed attempt at blending in with the building. Finally, what my tacky comment was for the stupid little amusement park ride on top, which is objectively tacky
