Thanks. Thought I had seen image discussed on this thread, but couldn't locate it via search function. Sorry for duplication.

Pershing Square parking has also been discussed. Sadly, with USC's digital changes, some images have disappeared (including one provided by gsjansen http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...postcount=2728. )

that overview of the underground parking lot construction is really interesting Chuckaluck.

I wasn't aware of this Masonic building until I came across this illustration.

Los Angeles Herald 1907

Chronicling America/Library of Congress

I was so hoping the building would still be there (masonic buildings seem to withstand the test of time). Alas, it wasn't to be.
It's gone. (if it was ever built on the site)

-the southeast corner of Pico and Fedora Street today

gsv

-the tall slender evergreen in both the illus. and the gsv view indicates the artist probably visited the location and was aware of the surroundings.
__

I didn't find the Masonic building, but I found something very intriguing across the street.

Northeast corner of Pico and Fedora Street (there's a jog in Fedora at this point)

gsv

This building has some of the most dazzling and intricate terra-cotta glaze designs that I've ever seen on a commercial building in Los Angeles.

gsv/detail

-above: notice how at the ground floor they merely painted over the beautiful terra-cotta tiles...hopefully they can
be restored one day.

gsv

-just imagine the artistic detail covered up by those crappy makeshift storefronts.

one last view

gsv

I'd love to know the history of this unusual building. It's such a beauty!
__

-after finishing my post, I've been thinking that there's a possibility we've seen this building before on the thread,
but I don't think so-

Re the tiled building--not much info, but a start...

Times Dec 19, 1920

Well, never mind... I just caught the word "unimproved," though this does help date the building.

That's a start GW. -thx

While searching for some background on the Pico/Fedora building I came across these photographs.

-something is missing along the cornice. the tile design abruptly stops.

Los Angeles Herald

Chronicling America

I'm a bit confused by this, Central Ave. and 7th is the location of the 7th Street Terminal Market....did this precede it?

More extant motels found on Ebay:

The Hollywood Colonial at 1730 North Western Avenue.

Ebay

It's lost some of its windows, and the entrance has been remodeled, but the Coral Sands Motel still has some of the Hollywood Colonial's features.

GSV

Hunt's Motel in Lynwood, complete with car-shaped roof sign. The reverse of the postcard boasts "21 New 'strictly modern' Motel Apts., all with tiled showers. Some with kitchennettes completely equipped, including refrigerators. Sun deck and garages. Phone: NEwmark 2-1543."

Ebay

The Art Deco charm has sadly gone, but the Economy Inn appears to be the same building.

25 Photos of the Los Angeles River before it was paved in 1938

1912: "The Los Angeles River cutting into the bank supporting the Los Angeles Pigeon Farm near north Figueroa Street in what would become the Cypress Park area."
This is the caption from just ONE of the photos in the linked photo essay from Curbed LA, called "25 Photos of the LA River before it was paved in 1938" If you like there are some 24 OTHER GREAT shots similar to what we've seen here before but from different angles. Sorry for the lazy method of sharing a link but they did a much better job putting it all together than I could have.

Excellent before/after HossC! thx for posting. The single round window has survived...and that's about it.

ER, you're correct in LARy's having preceded the 7th Street Terminal Market. LARy moved its shops to South Park (between 53rd and 55th Streets and between Avalon Blvd. and San Pedro St.) in 1906. However, they retained their adjacent Division One Car House into the 1950s. PE moved their adjoining shops to Torrance in 1915.

Thanks, Tourmaline. I searched for "Colonial" and got loads of results due to it being a building style, but I got nothing for "Hollywood Colonial". If only I searched for "Coral Sands" .

Thanks for the information HenryHuntington. -much appreciated!

-by the way, you look dapper in your double breasted suit.

Riverside's city park on Mount Rubidoux was originally named Huntington Park, and the road to the top was named Huntington Drive. After Frank Miller's heirs donated the property to the city, the park was renamed Frank A. Miller Rubidoux Park, and the road has become known as Mount Rubidoux Drive. A plaque that was dedicated to Huntington in 1907, in recognition of his contributions to the development of Mount Rubidoux, remains on a large boulder known as Huntington Rock. After Huntington's death a second tablet was placed on the north side of the hill at a place named the Huntington Shrine.

As the Coral Sands, this property functioned as a kind of gay sex spa for a number of years. It was especially raunchy and drug soaked in the mid to late 1990s. It appears to still operate as a semi-gay hotel to this day. Attached is a link to reviews of the present day property. http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserR...alifornia.html

HossC, you win top sleuth of the day.
I'm quite impressed you located the street corner from the Helms photograph.
I thought the street sign said Drexel...but then again, my eyes aren't so good [sic].

The Gage Drive-In would be built in the field slightly to the right of center at the bottom of the aerial above. Here it is in 1953 and the same area today:
