Your Nation's Iconic Building or Structure.

I was thinking about the iconic buildings and structures of the world, Eiffel Tower, Big Ben, Great Wall of China, which got me to thinking about the most iconic structures in the entire world.

So lets share our thoughts on what we think are our respective nation's, region's, state's, city's most iconic structure are.

I think for the nation state of California, it is a toss up between the Golden Gate Bridge for the north,

and the Hollywood Sign for the south.

What are your thoughts and ideas?

The symbol of America is inarguably the Empire State Building.

When you think of American city, you thing ESB.

Also, the Brooklyn Bridge and the WTC towers are well known symbols too.(Before 2001 for one reason and after 2001 for another)

Also, regarding credit to the photographers, just google "empire state building", "brooklyn bridge", "wtc towers" and you'll find out all of the sources on the first page.

From my neck of the woods, it would have to be:

(Michael Balter's Blog at http://michael-balter.blogspot.com/2...came-from.html)

Driving here from the east, you go on a very boring main road, until you cross the brow of the hill, and suddenly Stonehenge is right in front of you, by the side of the road. It's a very strange experience, like turning a corner and bumping into a celebrity. Only a very old and handsome celebrity.

I've been thinking about what an iconic building for the whole of Europe (or at least the European Union) might be. Europe has a lot of iconic buildings, but most are too bound up in national identity to stand for the whole continent. The signature buildings of the European Union like the Berlaymont and the Strasbourg Parliament are decent enough, but civic buildings these days have to double up as office blocks, so they struggle to carry off iconic status.

I guess, in the end, you have to go back to the oldest building, and the best.

Um, guys, I think you're forgetting one:

Independence Hall, the place the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were signed in.

Just from a Washington, DC perspective, I suppose either the Capitol or the White House... but the Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln monuments are very iconic too, as is the Pentagon.

The Lincoln, Capitol and White House are so iconic we've put them on our money:

... Although other buildings on money include (only going by permanent designs, not the year-to-year gimmicks)

Independence Hall (Philadelphia)

Treasury Buidling (Washington, DC - but less well known)

Statue of Liberty

Monticello (Jefferson's home)

all photos from the wikipedia page for that item

Definitely iconic at the scale of the city, but nationally? I'm not so sure.

If we're going to go the consumer culture route (not a bad idea frankly) I'd think this would be the more internationally recognized option:

You are absolutely right, I forgot it! With the Champs Elysées, the Arc de Triomphe may be in 2nd position just after the Eiffel Tower.
