Driving here from the east, you go on a very boring main road, until you cross the brow of the hill, and suddenly Stonehenge is right in front of you, by the side of the road. It's a very strange experience, like turning a corner and bumping into a celebrity. Only a very old and handsome celebrity.
I've been thinking about what an iconic building for the whole of Europe (or at least the European Union) might be. Europe has a lot of iconic buildings, but most are too bound up in national identity to stand for the whole continent. The signature buildings of the European Union like the Berlaymont and the Strasbourg Parliament are decent enough, but civic buildings these days have to double up as office blocks, so they struggle to carry off iconic status.
