Denver perspective

The green building trend looks to be really taking off in NY. I live in Denver and the people here claim to be really environmentally conscious but we don't have many large green buildings yet. I am trying to get my Denver heating company onto a big green building project as my little contribution.

I just saw on the news that Denver has more green buildings/LEED certified buildings per capita than any other city.

^Yes, but like all such claims, they aren't the only one. Pittsburgh claims the same thing.

I'm curious about the 5 buildings noted in the original post...I've seen 4/5 of them in person, but what exactly makes any of them green? I'm more interested in hearing about what features they have. It certainly would make for a more interesting thread rather than just 'look at this one! It's just so GREEEEEN!'

Gherkin Story

Article from http://images.businessweek.com/ss/06...n/source/9.htm

Inevitably known as the Erotic Gherkin, Norman Foster's London landmark raised the bar for sustainable skyscrapers around the world. Its distinctive tapering profile is the key to its energy efficiency because it creates a pressure differential between inside and outside, driving fresh air into the building. The diagrid structure—repeated, in a different form, in Foster's Hearst Tower in New York—allows for floor-to-ceiling windows, ensuring the maximum amount of daylight. A system of atria acts as the building's "lungs," circulating fresh air drawn through the facade's double-skin. Combined, the features reduce the building's energy consumption by half, compared to a typical air conditioned office tower.

The Conde Nast building is ugly as sin and the trio makes the NYC skyline look unbalanced with so many spires in the same area.

Oh, and I can throw up big-ass pictures too... here's the best green building:

Yuck, I don't like how you can see right into the mechanical penthouse on BofA from that angle. You spent all that money on a fancy crown and it doesn't even do its purpose? It doesn't even cover up all the junk on the roof? That's a shame. Then again, they sure love to stick junk on top of these new ~1000' buildings with toothpicks on the roof.

Is BOA the largest platinum building in the world? I would imagine so. What a brilliant building.

I would not call the Comcast Building green due to the miles of copper pipes that were installed but will never be used. Union thuggery at it's worst.
