The plots on the island of Sentosa are not large and neighboring buildings are built close to the sides of each house. Thus our strategy was to build a solid wall to each side neighbor to provide privacy where possible, while creating a central light and stair well which would funnel the sea breeze through the centre of the building.

Life on a Leaf: A total work of art. This isn't your typical slick modern white-walled box collection, but it's pretty amazing. I love that the architect let the client be the decider.

medieval building --> modern house

those other conversions looked pretty good I guess, but this one looks a whole lot more finished or polished somehow:

Quote:
Located in the core part of Girona’s medieval quarter and overlooking the Plaça de Sant Domènec, Spain, this is a property called Alemanys 5 within an original building dating back to the sixteenth century. The house has been recently renovated by architect Anna Noguera and has and incredible design which integrates old and new, integrates traditional and contemporary elements:

i agree! remods can be ugly too, but that looks fantastic!

the only thing i dislike sometimes is that they fail to add any greenery! add a small potted tree or two!

I love that earthy old rock work, like the rock was just dug up on site and mortared together without much processing. Looks great with wood beams and floors.

After working on a number of reconstruction projects post-tsunami in Sri Lanka, renowned architect Shigeru Ban was commissioned to build a private residence on a cliff overlooking the ocean. Built of concrete, local teak and coconut leaves, the home is a cantilevered, open-air beauty with framed views of the surrounding landscape. Shade screens and operable shutters keep out the sun and heat but encourage air to naturally flow through the open spaces.

Port Townsend Residence was designed by the architects from Bohlin Cywinski Jackson and is located in Washington. The house has amazing views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca as well as of the Olympic Mountains. Here is some information from the developers about the project:
