Best New Building.

PLEASE FOLLOW THE RULES ON THIS ONE GUYS>>>

of all the buildings completed in 2007 (choose from within your own town... or try to at least), which one is your favorite? and which one is the runner up? and which one is your honorable mention?

my favorite building built in chicago in 2007:
the new spertus building by krueck + sexton

*pics from the architect's website*

my runner-up for 2007 is:
the jahn near north SRO (we need more jahn in chicago!)

*greensource.construction.com*

honorable mention for 2007:
30 w oak by booth hasen, the tower and the town homes are amazing.

Good quality buildings.

Although, the backside of 30 W. Oak could have been better.

Hands down the best in Milwaukee, even though its partially renovation, everything is basically new except some of the skeleton towards the back of the building.

For Chicago I would agree with Spertus as #1 but 340 On the Park or N. Randolph is a close second. (Photos by BVictor1)

for Detroit it would have to be one of the Casinos all though Detroiters are more proud of the renovated Book-Cadillac building. I would say Motor City casino's exterior is better than MGM grand's. So Motor City casino is the top for Detroit.

In KC, 2007 marked the opening of the new downtown arena the Sprint Center. It was designed by a consortium of the big 4 sports stadium architecture firms that are all headquartered in Kansas City. It also includes the new College Basketball Hall of Fame

For Las Vegas, I would vote for Sky as the best new building completed in 2007. It opened in April, 2007. (My photos)

Second place would go to Allure. It was completed in late 2007 and opened in January, 2008.

Palazzo is a distant third place. Don't really care for the design on this one, even though it is four times bigger and cost about four times more than the other two buildings. It opened December 30th, 2007.

For Calgary, my favourite new building would have to be the City of Calgary Water Centre, which should recieve it's LEED Platinum certification whenever they finish up the last of the interior work...

© lumin8/livingforthecity

The runner-up would be Arriva (far right) which would have been better without the ridiculous "feather" spire. The second is U/C and the third approved... both much taller

yeah tell that to the worlds top architects who are busy designing the current batch of las vegas superhotels, maybe you heard of the likes of Cesar Pelli, Rafael Vinoly, Sir Norman Foster, James KM Cheng, Kohn Pedersen and Adrian Smith

next you will be telling us that las vegas has no place on a list of the usa/canadas top restaurants

I dont care who they throw money at to bring any kind of attempt at architectural legitimacy to the town...it simply is a wonderful example of everything tacky and overdone.

food wise...i find it like everything else vegas, over priced and over rated.

you are entitled to your opinion but the 40 million people who visit the city each year seem to disagree. Look up the definition of "tacky" and then try to attach the word tacky to places like Wynn, Bellagio, Venetian or Mandalay Bay or any of the five star resorts currently under construction. Tacky is a great word to throw out especially when it involves vegas; sure there are tacky building/areas in vegas but new york, chicago and los angeles have many "tacky" buildings and areas too

this sentence makes no sense to me.

you can get a 1000sq foot suite at a five star resort in vegas for less than the price of a small cramped room at a 3 star hotel in new york.

there are only 17 Mobil five star restaurants in the whole of the USA and vegas has two of them (Alex at the Wynn and Joel Robuchon at the MGM), thats roughly 12% of the total of the whole country, the whole of california only has one Mobil five star restaurant as far as i am aware, in the entire USA/Canada only about 140 restaurants were graded Mobil four star and las vegas has either 6 or 7 (not totally sure on that, but its either of those) or about 5% of the total.

^i dont dispute 40 million people here...im just saying good architecture and vegas should not be in the same sentence.

to me the whole city is a contrived attempt at cool and hip

vegas folds.

this thread is about choosing your favourite building of 2007 in your home town, its has nothing to do with the best architecture, anyway what one person views as great architecture the next person will view as tacky and horrible e.g. new york new york hotel in las vegas has been described as the finest piece of pop art in the world by many, others think its tacky, some of my friends think its great, i think its meh....

imo chicago is currently in the process of building the worlds largest dildo yet many see the spire as great architecture, everybody has an opinion and nobody is right or wrong, beauty is in the eye of the beholder
