It's a sculpture, a work of art. Not so much a structure. The mountain was not built, it was carved.

If you really want to get representative, I would add to this several buildings/structures symbolic of this counties history:

Anisazie (sic?) cliff dwellings in the American southwest.
Chahokia Mounds, a World Heritage Site in Collinsville, Illinois
Any prominate Effigy Mound site in the eastern US

(all are very indicative of ancient America)

Independence Hall, Philadelphia
War of 1812 Balitmore Harbor Fort (sorry don't recall the name)
Lincoln Memorial, Washington DC
Mackinaw Island, MI (talk about a place that is Americana, the whole thing is full of historic structures)

this thread is funny...
nyse? when i asked my friend in berlin what the nyse looked like, she had no idea. in fact, i made my list when talking to my german friends... i asked, when you think of america, what comes to mind.

i am curious about what people think of when they think of a country.

dan added some really good ones that i forgot about:
hoover damn
the hollywood sign
independence hall
castle at disneyworld

also, why do americas (mostly east coasters) always leave chicago out of the mix? i asked my friend in berlin, what do you think of when you think of america, and she said: new york, chicago, vegas, florida, california, and dallas. so i don't get why all the other american lists leave sears and hancock out... after all, sears is our tallest building...

How about the West Edmonton Mall? Perhaps even the Esplanade Riel. I see it as one of the most iconic bridges in the country.

You could probably add Confederation Bridge to that list as well.

1. Newgrange County Meath, built about 3300 BC, more than 500 years before the great pyramid at giza and 1000 years before Stonehenge. At dawn on December 21st every year the sun shines through the opening to light the inside of the passageway, it only happens once every year

2. Custom House Dublin, designed by James Gandon and finished in 1791, it was nearly totally destroyed by fire during the Irish civil war of the early 1920s, it was retored to its former glories in the 1980s

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...at_night_2.jpg

3. Four Courts Dublin, another Gandon masterpiece which was completed in 1802, it too was very badly damaged in the Irish civil war but by 1932 the building was operational again

6.Bunratty Castle, County Clare, the current struture was finished in 1425 but there has been a castle on the site since 970 AD, predecessors were razed to the ground by various groups, today it is one of the few fully working castles left in ireland

7. Sean's Bar, Athlone, the oldest pub/bar in Europe dating back to 900 AD, and is listed by Guinness World Records as so. During renovations in 1970, the walls of the bar were found to be made of wattle and wicker, dating back to the ninth century. Guinness are currently investigating whether Sean's is the oldest bar in the world.
