BOX CAR BARCADE

A barcade (arcade / bar) is opening on Lewis Street in the Old Greensborough historic district of downtown. It will look a lot like the Box Car in Raleigh. Lewis Street is located adjacent to "The Railyard" a collection of restaurants and the future Wet Willies daiquiri bar which has become a destination bar in cities centered around tourism.

renovation underway on Lewis Street Boxcar Greensboro. They have already started installing arcade games. The Barcade will open in February.

Also on Lewis Street a live music venue is coming

300 to 350 people will be able to hear local and national acts play rock, jazz, blues and bluegrass in an intimate 5,000 square foot space in an early 1900s building. It fills a niche for smaller events where venues like the House of Blues Cone Denim Entertainment Center on South Elm Street host larger events.

As I was looking on the internet I noticed the city has plans to renovate the old Sears Distribution Center in Greensboro north of midtown on Lawndale Dr. At one time it was the largest air conditioned building in the state. A big chuck of it was demolished and it was once over 2 million sq feet. The city has come up with concept drawings to turn it into a mixed use building complete with a sculptures pedestrian sky bridge from the Atlantic & Yadkin Greenway which will eventually link to midtown and to the downtown Greenway. The uses for the building have not been determined. I think it would be great if it were a third Gateway University Research Park campus, one that includes retail, residential, restaurants, research/innovation labs and some sort of a joint university school.

I have always wondered what that massive building was. Glad to see it going to good use now.

Here is a recent rendering of the planned Westin Hotel in downtown Greensboro. It may not be the final design though. The rendering shows an 8 story hotel on top of a 6 story parking deck with ground level retail. The hotel will be built on the back side of The Elm Street Center which is currently a conference center and will be incorporated with the hotel.

The latest plans call for an 11 story hotel on top of a 6 story deck. The deck will be built by the city and will cross over the road to the right in the rendering and extend an entire block with ground level shops and restaurants. The city council just voted to enter an agreement with the hotel developer and voted to purchase property for the deck. Construction will begin early next year with an opening date in 2019. Based on the latest news, the hotel should be 3 stories taller than what you see in the rendering.

downtown ballpark development update.

Construction is still currently underway on the Carroll at Bellemeade development just east of First National Bank Field being built by Greensboro developer Roy Carroll of the Carroll Companies.

A new development is currently being planned just south of the ballpark on property Roy Carroll owns. According to Starwood Hotels website an Aloft Hotel will be opening there in 2020 but there were no other details listed. Greensboro city council just entered an agreement with Roy Carroll to build a $30 million 8-story 1,050 space parking deck on the site which will have street level retail and restaurants. The council agenda noted that there are plans to build a 15 to 20 story mixed-use tower on top of the 8-story deck and the tower will include a hotel (Aloft) in addition a 100,000 square foot office building which would likely be between 10 and 15 stories will be built adjacent to the parking deck.
