This is what makes DTLA so special, its diversity. SF, Manhattan, etc are increasingly becoming homogeneous, and (despite their beautiful architecture and geography) are beginning to resemble the suburbs that surround them.
Oooh, Citywatch won't be happy to see someone on this board shops at swapmeets.

Personally, I appreciate this P.O.V. and think there's room downtown for a little of everything. I love seeing all kinds of people in the historic core. And while I don't necessarily think every swapmeet and luggage shop should stay, I'd hate to see the neighborhood rid itself of everything that kept the streets active when most Angelinos avoided the area like the plague.

Brudy I'm with you. DTLA is better off without the unsightly grime and decay (urban blight) of the historic section and is what's preventing DTLA from really taking off. The development of Oceanwide Plaza should go a long way in bringing some respectability; more than its museums ever did (it's dead on that side of town)

actually, I'll be perfectly happy if ppl are visiting swapmeets in pico rivera or huntington park, or areas like that. but if they're swapmeeets on one of the few streets in dtla with lots of classic old bldgs, & where the few nice newer stores or restaurants are struggling to survive, then that's a whole different matter.

Excellent videos citywatch. And I agree with what I think is the premise of your post, but I think its important to point out the size of the space we are talking about. Downtown LA is the same size as the area of San Francisco all the way from Fishermans Wharf to the 24th Street Corridor in the Mission. There is room for a wide variety of uses in DTLA, ranging from a quesadilla cart on LA Street to Bottega Louie on 7th Street. And having those and other eclectic uses all within walking distance adds much to DTLA's vibrancy and richness

They must mean the Frankentower, which isn't really the Fashion District but close enough I guess.

First glimpse of Ferrante, Geoff Palmer's 1,500-unit project across the freeway from Da Vinci.

People like him who are driven by nothing other than money never retire--they just die. And I'm sure that he has left some ready, willing, and able progeny to follow in "papa's" shoes.

The average locally-focused urban developer is like a restaurant owner...they're in it for the money, but they also build stuff they like and will be proud of. National developers can be like that too, but business and repetition often dominate more. It's a very different picture than what it might look like from the outside (I work for a GC).

Im a little suprised by the relative stubbyness of the project.. i was expecting 55 - 40 story towers based on the room counts and the lot size. Oh well, 1100 rooms is nothing to sneeze at

I think the other projects are taller due to the fact that they're mixed use.

The 18 story Metropolis can fit 350 rooms. The courtyard is only 22 floors and fits 393 rooms.

If they're going to split two towers into full hotel rooms it seems about right. I'm fine with it. The 40 story will be taller than Circa so that should be a nice appearance when looking down Fig past Hanzen, Oceanwide and Circa. It's incredible how different this street will be in just 3 years. Hopefully they FINALLY incorporate a spire into this design. I want more pointy roofs and spires!
