Both options would create a “large-scale, mixed-use development” on the land the partnership acquired, the transit center site and around 1.7 acres that the firms said they have under contract to purchase at the southeast corner of Brevard and 4th streets.

The document estimates the first option would cost around $375 million, and the second would cost around $387 million.

Uptown/South End I-277 Pedestrian Bridge finally funded

U.S. Bank will help fund the construction of a pedestrian bridge over Interstate 277, Center City Partners said Wednesday, as local leaders look to connect uptown with South End.

As the lead sponsor, the bank will contribute $1 million to the estimated $11.5 million bridge, which will cross the interstate between South College Street and South Boulevard. There are also local and state funds for the project — the city will pay $3.1 million, the N.C. Department of Transportation is kicking in $3.3 million and Mecklenburg County will contribute $3.1 million.

Design work is expected to start this year, with construction beginning by summer 2021. The bridge was cut from the Blue Line’s plans prior to its opening in 2007 to save money. The trail runs for miles along the light rail, but pedestrians and cyclists have to get on a bridge with heavy car traffic over I-277 to get into uptown.

A recent site plan revision is now requesting up to 350 units and includes a rendering of what the project could look like.

Another tower announced for South End...SE is having its' own mini skyline sooner rather than later.

Florida-based developer Stiles Corporation and San Francisco real estate firm Shorenstein Properties said they had purchased the 2-acre site for the development, off of South Boulevard next to the East/West light rail station. The site includes restaurants Tupelo Honey and The Manchester, and other businesses, but the tower will be built on the parking lot behind them, said Justin Siemens, president of Stiles Carolinas.

Construction on the 385,000-square-foot office building could start within the next year, Stiles said in a release.

I wonder if South end will start developing more similarly to Midtown Atlanta or Uptown Dallas. It seems like the projects being announced there are getting higher in height.

I don't know about that....but when I saw the purchase price I was like what the heck! That's like uptown territory.

Makes sense. More expensive land means you have to build higher to get a decent ROI.
