Cool AUSTIN | Canopy by Hilton Austin Downtown | FEET | 6 FLOORS | COMPLETE

New hotel proposed in W. 6th Street, where the bar 219 West used to be. The article is showing a ground-floor restaurant too.

The only other Canopy hotel is in Reykjavik Iceland. So this is pretty exciting for a new boutique.

The only other one currently open...is in Reykjavik, Iceland.

However, their are two opening late this year in the Washington, D.C. area and one in Dallas. In 2018: Portland (OR), Ithaca, London (UK), Minneapolis, Oklahoma City, Atlanta, Toronto, San Antonio, and West Palm Beach

In 2019: Charlotte, Baltimore, Columbus and Hangzhou

Yep, agreed. Especially because of the CVC limitations, we're probably likely to see something closer to the Icelandic version rather than any of the other American renderings, which are all mid-rises or taller.

No, not really. It's one of Hilton's boutique brands. When comparing it to a Starwood brand, it's a bit higher than aloft, but, maybe, a bit lower than a W (if that makes sense).

Canopy is listed right below Hilton's Conrad brand and above their mainline Hilton brand on Hilton.com. It says it is the "fresh, neighborhood hotel."

In case anyone was wondering...

This tidbit from the last site plan update indicates that it is either 5 or 6-stories:

Quote:
Cover page under “Intended use of floors” shows floors 2 thru 5. Plans indicate this is a 6 story building. Please confirm and correct as needed.

Looks like it fits the area quite nicely. Always love Lake Flato's intimate designs and close attention to detail.

Nice use of a capital corridor lot. Probably deserves the credit for the underground parking.

Would you want to have the room overlooking the Rio pool lounge or not?

This project will really help the fading W. 6th St District. According to the ABJ the groundbreaking is planned for July.

Some more renderings from the ABJ:

I wonder why Hilton doesn't list it on their locations/upcoming page.

http://canopy3.hilton.com/en/locations/index.html

Looks like SA is getting one too.

Hotel websites always seem to be a poor source for new hotel info. By the time they post about new hotels, there is always a lot of news available from other sources.

That S.A. Canopy is really nice. Austin's is limited by a CVC, but it replaces an eyesore and will be a big boost to that area.
