Seeing this building gradually disappear is a bit like watching HAL get turned off in 2001: A Space Oddessy

Kudos to Harry C, george and others for documenting the painful process. I can only think it will get more poignant as time goes by.

Really sad about this. Even though the replacement looks nice, it is just a generic glass building. Nothing special about it. Not worthy at all as a successor to what stood before.

They should have just blown it up and gotten the demo over with all at once so we wouldn't have to deal with the specter of this landmark being slowly eroded away.

^^^ No, I'm glad it is well documented so we can shame Northwestern with these photos for all eternity. Eventually Prentice is going to be remembered as a watershed moment and Northwestern will forever be portrayed in a poor light.

Was always bummed about this demolition because I was born there. Don't hate what they're replacing it with though.

Northwestern University must be in an absolute rush to build their latest "masterpiece" if they are going through the trouble of seeding this lot with grass. /Sarcasm. My guess is all the talk of the new building starting will disappear after Rahm wins reelection and this lot will sit vacant for a decade:

don't worry, whats the rush, Northwestern needs this facility to expand their research enterprise. They have more interest in this new building than anyone, just be patient

Lol except that they don't. They have interest in the land and they could not get the land with Prentice on it. The replacement is just a pathetic ruse to try to lessen political blowback for Rahm. Willing to bet this sits vacant for years if not decades. We should start a campaign to retain the lot as a park once they finally do try to build something to punish these bastards.

Northwestern is a super wealthy school (endowment of $8 billion!) with comparably lofty ambitions. They would have built this facility whether or not they were forced to incorporate Prentice into the design. Of course, it was in their financial interest not to (savings of millions of dollars), so they argued for its demolition, basing their case on the causes du jour: Economy! Jobs! Institutional prestige! Global city!

I refuse to believe that Rahm isn't shrewd enough to have seen through this, though. So why did he acquiesce? I really don't have an answer. Part of me thinks it could be hubris, that he knows better than the so-called "experts" attesting to Prentice's importance--the people to whom he should have deferred. I also don't think he understands, appreciates, or is even really curious about architecture as anything more than a marketing tool for the city. But both of these things are huge problems when you then propose something like a Venice Biennale to celebrate Chicago's architecture. The contradiction is infuriating.

^^^ Of course Rahm saw through it, but money speaks and politicians listen, particularly in Chicago. I'm sure Northwestern is making sure hundreds of thousands of dollars is funneled his way either from NW themselves or alumni.
