The effect on vacancies is noticeable.. In my neighbourhood's retail strip, vacated storefronts are getting new tenants much more quickly now.
Yeah, this makes sense. I don't know what the rules are like in general around North America, but this mystery vacancy phenomenon is widespread. Normally people talk about rents and demand, but regulations like this can have as much of an impact even if average people don't know about them.

Of course I've also heard lots of stories of crazy or abusive landlords that have a hard time renting out properties. In one case a building was won by a lady in a divorce (i.e. she came into possession but had no ability or desire to be a landlord) and she kept doing things like turning off the power and water and then coming by and telling tenants if they wanted it back on they had to pay more than what was in the lease (!). I think rising property values have kept a lot of these landlords in business too. You can be a terrible landlord and still earn huge returns every year in many Canadian cities right now. In a market with stagnant land values people like that would go bankrupt.

As for this thread, we've come full circle. Sponsorship of family members that are unable to contribute but take full advantage of our social net are once again causing financial strain. This government seems oblivious to the costs and continues to actively promote new immigrants to sponsored family members that will never participate in the workforce.

You see the stark contrast among refugees to Canada. Non profits are bringing in people with skills even just being able to read and write while the Trudeau government is poised to bring in those without skills, can't read or write but, can produce many more babies than the average middle class working family could ever afford. Of course, those costs eventually fall to cities and provinces so the Trudeau government gets votes and a city like Toronto teeters on bankruptcy

Syria is a disaster. There still shouldn't be a need to ship refugees a world's away if Syria's wealthy neighbours did their part. My parents were among the many more refugees after WW2. They weren't shipped halfway around the world.
You raise some valid points though in the case of this Syrian family and their rogue son, it doesn't appear like they were refugees who were unable to contribute. Even if they've closed their restaurant my guess is they'll probably land on their feet before too long.

Wow, I'm amazed that CBSA has their act together enough to get on this so promptly. A timely reminder international students aren't always the studious type but can be the "bad seeds" their parents are looking to get rid of:

Surrey RCMP say three individuals will be deported from Canada as a result of their involvement in a series of assaults involving large groups of youths over the past several months.

Police say they have been looking into the crimes, footage of which circulated on social media, since March and have investigated 50 individuals connected to the groups.

The most recent incident involved video of an assault with a weapon and vandalism to property which occurred in a Newton parking lot on Nov. 11.

An earlier video showed a fight taking place in the parking lot of a strip mall in Strawberry Hills in August.

"These deportations were as a direct result of some of the investigation that was done into that fight," said Surrey RCMP Cpl. Elenore Sturko...

I concur with what whatnext said here. Many wealthy parents send their kids away as their embarrassments. This is something practiced by almost every culture. You see this often in Vancouver. I know several of my classmates were shipped off to Western Ontario. Although asians are the obvious example simply because there's more of them, you do see this with every ethnicity. They are often annoying and rude but their money is as good as anyone else's and the taxes/fees/etc they pay is of benefit to our economy. In the words of Russel Peters "Beat your kids".

The Fifth Estate today shines a light on the sordid world of birth tourism. British Columbians are owed millions in unpaid bills by foreign mothers, and unsurprisingly Richmond BC is the epicentre of the trade:

Judging by the protests in Canadian cities this week, Iranians that support the brutal Iranian regime and its brutal Quds forces seem fit to immigrate to Canada.

They've killed fewer people than the Americans and we support the Americans.

Oh, but that's right, the Americans killed the right people for the right reasons, and Quds killed the wrong people for the wrong reasons. That's the difference!

A lot of people don't understand this. It was Obama that threw Suleimani under the bus when Quds was a US ally, part of why they're so angry at the US. In hindsight, it's his fault for trusting the US in the first place. They already had an established reputation of switching allegiances and backstabbing allies in the middle east before the war against ISIS.

Obama droned fucking wedding parties and school buses with kids on them and no one gave a fuck. Donald Trump continues doing it and everyone is losing their minds. I think he's actually killed fewer people over his first term than Obama had.

How is it surprising that Iranian Canadians support their cousins back home? Really no different than 106 year's ago when the English and Scottish Canadians were leaving to fight the Germans in Europe for England. Or the situation in Hong Kong today.

False analogy. The HK protestors are fighting for democracy (a shared value with Canada) against an authoritarian dictator. The pro-Islamic Republic Canadians, not so much.

There are Iranians who moved here not because Iran is authoritarian, but because the sanctions on Iran limit their potential there and they wanted to find a more stable and prosperous life. It doesn't necessarily mean they hate Iran's current government. There seem to be plenty of Chinese-Canadians who support the Communist Party of China.

Because they like everything about Canada except what makes it so great. It's a kind of hypocrisy and lack of forethought but it's also a symptom of their brainwashing in China. The Party is China and that's more or less what they're taught. An offense to the party is an offense to the self, so you can't even say "Well, I like the Chinese people but I hate the government."

Not really sure having three flavours of soup instead of one is "what makes Canada so great" but I understand your point. I was recently treated similarly by some people on this forum for daring to criticize Canada.

I've seen the way some Chinese people kind of lock up or get shell shocked when you criticize the CPC to them. They're not able to handle it very well; at best they change the subject or just tell you to not bring it up around them. It's kind of sad. The middle east has a similar cult effect but it's kind of different because it's so religion based, while in the socialist countries it's based on whoever the leader of the government is. The US kind of has this issue with all the Trump supporters.

Canada was at war with Germany in 1914, a fact that rather weakens the analogy.

That's just how many soup heating trays there are. Tim Hortons actually has like 9 or 10 different flavours, but the stores only have the capacity to serve three at a time.

It's kind of annoying because you never know what you're going to get, if you have a favourite soup, it might not be there.
