Announced to whom?? Does anybody else have any info about these 700 units?

sirkingwilliam has posted enough articles that would suggest to me that half of these units are in The Rim and those parts. i think he would have the recollection to help us guesstimate how many of those units are suburban.

Doens't it say being constructed or proposed? And I'm assuming they're talkin of the ones we know of already.
"Some of the projects under way around downtown include the 150-unit Vidorra near Sunset Station, the 84-unit Judson's Candy Factory Lofts on South Flores Street and the 147-unit Alteza on top of the Grand Hyatt hotel. There are also about 700 units that have been announced, but are still in the planning stages, Metrostudy's Allsup said." from the new posting on Mysa.com

http://www.mysanantonio.com/business...d.2d70411.html

I guess they are adding the 94 from the Broadway, Piazza San Lorenzo has about 27, Embarcadero will bring 24, 63 at steel house lofts, and aren't there 66 units yet to be redone at the St Benedicts hospital where the new Liberty Bar is going to be? Clay street flats will bring 94. just a few i could think of.

hmm, seems like nobody's has heard from Piazza San Lorenzo in awhile. I hope that's not dead. . .

And yeah, I got the impression that the "700 units" was referring to downtown, or downtown and the immediate areas.

Many of these are no longer in the planning stage. Piazza San Lorenzo, which probably will not be built in my lifetime, is the only one that hasn't started site work. The others have initiated site work and most are well into the construction phase.

I think, the 700 are mostly units we haven't heard of and a few we have like the W, the condos at Joske's, and the Trinity condos.

Also, if I had put 50K to 150K down on a fractional unit at PSL, you can bet I would be requesting my money back about now.

I hope it's not dead. But if it is, hopefully Raba sells the property to someone who can develop it properly.

even more of the same (drury and courtyard and holiday inn) boring stuff would be better than that solo serve building just standing like a big fat jerk.

sell the land in pieces to groups that want it and let them get to work.

Does anyone think a big mixed-use development near Market Square with a big farmer's market would be successful?

like a disorganized whole foods type thing? with some condos, apartments, and maybe some legit retail? sure. but you'll have to build a lot of units to make it work. is demand strong enough?

with vistana coming on (and maybe more like it eventually) we may be 10 years from seeing something like that happen organically... get it - organically? farmers market? ok.

No, I'm talking about something like Dallas' Farmer's Market or Pike's Place in Seattle sans the fresh fish.

And no, I wouldn't sell this only towards downtown residents but everyone in the city. I know so many people in suburbia who go to the west side and buy their fruit and vegetables from produce row. I think a farmer's market in a central location would work.

There's no "'s" in Pike Place Market

A central farmer's market and neighborhood farmer's markets would be fantastic. We have enough growers in the metro area to make it happen.

i would be the first one there - i would ride the bus and stock up...

but imagine suburbia complaining about the lack of parking and the cost of gas and blah blah blah...

it would have to be downtown driven at least until the weekend. pike place is packed on monday almost as much as saturday. local restaurants use it for fresh ingredients and residents as their local grocery.

thats why i suggested it as part of a complex (more condos apartments etc)...i think people in the area have to sustain it.

There was a farmer's market in Market Square; it closed some time ago. I remember going there as a kid.

Maybe local and neighborhood markets would be the best first step?

Those get more support by and large in a city without an existing market. Look at Portland's move to a new central market-- that's a clusterf*ck for sure.

A farmer's market is a cool idea. I'm just wondering how much residential has to go up before H-E-B will build a downtown store? Surely they won't put one in Austin before they put one in their home market.
