High-rise fashion fete gets WFC in fire-code fix
By Dong Hui and Liang Yiwen | 2008-9-19 | NEWSPAPER EDITION
THE new half-kilometer-high World Financial Center, mainland China's tallest skyscraper and the third tallest building in the world, is under investigation by the city's fire control authority for violating regulations.
"The center might receive its first fine notice on fire control," said Zhou Meiliang, media coordinator of the Shanghai Fire Control Bureau.
The WFC held a dinner party on its 100th floor on September 8, but the floor's fire-control facilities only allow sightseeing activities, the bureau said.
The party was thrown by Hermes, a high-end French fashion brand, which gave a men's winter collection fashion show in the building the following day, authorities reported.
"The sightseeing hall on the 100th floor was registered for sightseeing use," Zhou said. "The design of fire control facilities in the hall differs from that for food and beverage service. The fire control facilities may not be efficient."
On the afternoon of September 8, the bureau sent officers to the WFC to warn them about the violation, but the party went ahead regardless. The center may now be fined up to 200,000 yuan (US$29,265), according to Zhou.
The sales department of the WFC said it had stopped booking events that involved serving food and drinks on the 100th floor.
The tower is a popular tourist spot, offering visitors an unparalleled views of the city.
The center has received 77 tour groups since it opened to groups on Wednesday. Individual visitors have been able to visit the tower since August 30.
On its first open day, the tower received more than 4,000 visitors. This number soared to 6,000 on the second day. About 20,000 people visited the tower during last weekend's Mid-Autumn Festival.
