It's probably unfair to criticize this proposal without further detail on it, but this particular area of downtown has blocks and blocks of vacant retail storefronts. It would be a very risky move to put retail there (let alone a 60+ storey tower), you'd be much better off at Harbour East or on the waterfront.

But I agree, I wouldn't place to much seriousness in this proposal.

The base may not turn out to look like that at all. The developer is proposing to build this tower in two phases, with the first phase being the base, which will include retail and parking, and the second phase being the mixed use tower. The base could begin construction by the end of the year (one forumer on SSC with inside information stated that work would begin in August on the first property), and the tower would be built later and tailored to the market (probably around 2010).

So it is possible that the architect who designed the towers pictured is not the same architect who has designed the base. What we do know is that the city recently sent the design back to the architect to redesign because they said the entrance was not grand enough for such an iconic tower.

So long story short, there is still hope that the base may eventually be worthy of the rest of the towers, which I think are beautiful.

I hate it. Just looking at it makes me anxious for some reason. It's too frenetic, like it was designed by an architect with ADD.

I almost feel like the emperor in "Amadeus" saying that one of Mozart's operas "has too many notes". But then, this isn't Mozart. This design really needs to be broken down and simplified.

I really like it, though I agree that the base could use work.

But the renderings are exactly the same. I bet that the developer is just pondering over which location to choose.

I seriously hope that one set of twins will be built. I even like the podium.

Wow. Nice. Hard to picture how they'll fit in w/ the rest of Baltimore's skyline, but they look great. I hope they get built.
