It's a much better looking city than its reputation suggests. I've been there a couple of times and have never understood why people hated on it so much. Maybe it's just the cold that gets to people, because I definitely enjoyed my time there.

I agree though much of the city including some key parts of the core is in dire need of some TLC.

it is a fairly dynamic and interesting city culturally.

I had a lovely time there, but was of course there only a short time.

I went on a date recently with a guy who was telling me how shockingly dangerous the inner city area is. He's a muscular 220 lb man and still found it uncomfortable walking around downtown at night. I was a bit surprised.

Yeah, that is surprising. I've never felt threatened there at any point, but I was only in town for a few days at a time, so not enough to really get the full picture.

Shockingly dangerous is maybe overstating things, but Winnipeg is definitely an outlier by Canadian standards. During the daytime it's fine, but at night when the streets empty out of normal working people there can be an intimidating edge. I notice the same vibe to a slightly lesser extent in Regina, Saskatoon and Edmonton, but not really in other Canadian cities.

Anyway, re SHH's post, I admit it's been a long time since I've been to NL (20 years this spring, definitely due for another visit), but I don't remember the city looking quite so European. Some strong Euro vibes happening there.

I notice this in Hamilton. I have family there so I'm in town every couple of months. Sometimes i'll head downtown for a bit to get a coffee or something and I never know what I'm going to encounter. In the day time it's usually no problem, but the last time I grabbed a coffee on James Street, I was aggressively harnessed for absolutely no reason. I've had a couple of other experiences like that when I've been in downtown Hamilton.

^ Yeah, I thought Hamilton might fit into that category too but I really haven't spent enough time there to know one way or the other.

Unfortunately, it does. I've always has a soft spot for Hamilton because I spent lots of time around there when I was younger but something seems to be a bit off downtown right now.

Unless you arrive by cruise ship, it won't feel that way. Outside of the very small core, it's the worst of North American urban planning (or lack thereof), architecture, etc. It's just brutal. I mean, this is less than a minute driving outside the core:

If you live and work downtown, it's wonderful - small but active, artsy, engaging. But if you're anywhere else... no. If I lived in, say, Mount Pearl and worked in one of the industrial or big box areas, and only ended up downtown with a specific reason to go there... I can't think of a city I'd want to live in less. All the shit of being out in, say, Mississauga with absolutely none of the benefits.

I came across this one of UBC, interesting because it's from a perspective rarely seen. Putting the point in Point Grey.
