ok, thanks...

we have to remember that the GH has 1000+ rooms on 23 floors. the rest is condos.

(23 sounds right, but maybe i am off by one or two)

The correct number is 981 Room $76M Candlewood Suites.
I guess we'll see. There is a huge lot behind the "old" PX and the Lemon Lot.
981!!!!!!

That is completely ridiculous. Let the predictions on height roll in. How big is the lot?

The lot (if I'm looking at the right one on google) appears to be several acres at least. Browsing Candlewood's website, I'm seeing they have mostly 3 to 4 stories, with the rooms spread out over mulitiple buildings in many cases. So based on their existing stock and the room available to them at Ft Sam, we might be looking at the rooms being split up.

Of course, its likely none of their existing hotels has 981 rooms, so all bets are off

"Several acres" doesn't sound like a highrise to me. It would have be 2 acres or less, probably around 1.5. Remember the JW Marriott is 1,002 rooms, and while it is technically a highrise because of its height (easily over 115 feet tall), it's only about 8 or 9 floors. But that's a HUGE building, so they could easily place all of those rooms in a tower. If they really do want to make this area urban and walkable, the building should be tall and slender. I don't know about you, but I'd hate to have to walk around that JW Marriott just to get to the other side!

Remember this is SA not Austin. I guess it is a fear of heights or something but to even get 9 floors here is lucky.

Even if its just 9 or 10 floors it will be poking into the modest north central skyline (Im using the term skyline loosely ). BAMC makes an impact even though it's just 6 floors. And the 6 story office building on Broadway next to the Broadway condos is pretty visible as well.

This Candlewood in Indianapolis is 12 stories and 142 rooms. If the Ft Sam Candlewood were to be the same footprint, it would be over 80 stories tall...

Y'all are forgetting that USAA Towers are right next door and that does make a pretty big impact on the skyline.

Yeah, the BAMC is pretty tall. I've actually counted 8 floors for it though. I'm sure it's a high-rise (at least 115 feet tall). Going by Maps.live, I'd say it's maybe ~130 feet tall.

I was on 410 E today, and I saw two new cranes at Ft Sam (or at least new to me). One is a small one, and the other is the type that was used at the GH, or at least I think it was. Im no crane expert.

I didn't have a camera at the time, and I'm never on the far east side, so I can't provide any pics. However, it looked like it was east of BAMC and that residential tower (don't know its name). Perhaps this is the legendary Candlewood Suites?

I discovered today that it is in fact two of those large cranes, not one. I also discovered that they are visible from 281 near the olmos dam.

Those are for the METC campus buildings 1 and 2. The METC administration building shell is almost complete too. We should be seeing a couple more cranes go up by next spring; BAMC is already shuttling employees over so the Trauma tower and garage might be breaking ground soon.
