Umm, Roughnecks sucks. Houston is like Toronto plopped into Texas, Roughnecks works much better for San Antonio or Fort Worth (but both are urban and to a lesser extent cosmopolitan). Turn off the John Wayne movies, not all of Texas is like that.

Roughnecks wouldn't work well for S.A.

Not sure of a city it would work well for. Borough-wise, Bronx or Brooklyn might reflect a cinematic fit.

Houston can use Hurricanes for a non-NHL sport.

The ownership group in OKC is all locally-based so unless they sell out I don't think the team is going anywhere. And as the only pro team in Oklahoma, a state with a population of 4M, they have good support. OKC and Tulsa metros are combined 2.5M. Now that the team isn't as good it will be interesting to see how well they support the team during a few down years.

Since the last set of posts, Sacramento was also awarded an MLS franchise.

Stadium located in the Railyards just north of downtown.

Will be interesting to see whether any of the following cities land an NBA team this coming decade:

Seattle
Las Vegas
St. Louis
Pittsburgh
Cincinnati
San Diego (doubtful)

Very good chance for Seattle. Decent chance for Las Vegas. Slim chance for the others. IMO Louisville has a better shot than St Louis, Cincy or Pittsburgh.

How so? It's a much smaller MSA than the others, and in a state seemingly dominated by college hoops.

Cincinnati can barely support the pro teams it has and is currently entangled in what most experts call one of the biggest public stadium funding ripoffs in history thanks to Mike Brown's contentment to suck so long as he gets money from the NFL. I'm pretty sure the Bengals will move to another city when their stadium agreement with Hamilton County expires in 2026.

Louisville is a basketball crazy town that had a relatively popular ABA team back in the 1970s. I could see them supporting an NBA team.

I'd throw Kansas City into the mix, too.

I know they had the Kings in the 70s and 80s, but it seems like an NBA team would do well these days in KC given their long obsession with the Jayhawks.

I would be surprised if Vegas doesn't have an NBA team by the end of the 2020s.

They've shown surprisingly strong local, homegrown support for the NHL, so I don't see why they couldn't support a sport that's growing as popular globally as basketball is. The star-driven nature of the NBA obviously suits Vegas well.

It was a perfect storm for the Golden Knights though given the opening night of the city's first professional franchise coinciding with the mass shooting only weeks before. Add in a historic finals run in their inaugural season and they seem to be pretty well ingrained into the city's culture already.

It would be a disgrace if Vegas got an NBA team before the Sonics return to Seattle...

^ the sprint center is now a dozen years old and still doesn't have a main tenant.

when does KC throw in the towel on NBA/NHL and at least try to get an AHL team or something in there to try to fill some of the seats of that white elephant?

Charlotte is the newest MLS team and will begin play in 2021. With the success of Atlanta United, Nashville beginning play next season, as well as Inter Miami, looks like MLS is finally getting a hold in the south.

Mario Lemieux had threatened to move the Pittsburgh Penguins to Kansas City unless Pittsburgh voted to approve a new arena, which they did. Unfortunately, we later learned that it was just a scare tactic, and that he was never serious about moving the team out of Pittsburgh, and openly admitted that he was just using the Sprint Center as leverage, and essentially "used" KC as an excuse to get the red carpet treatment when he visited the Kansas City officials!! Since then, there hasn't been really any talk about getting an NBA or NHL team.

More than likely, the window of opportunity has essentially closed on the Sprint Center, which is too bad, because it's still a state of the art arena, and there seems to be enough support to accommodate a team. That said, the Sprint Center appears to be doing well. There are quite a number of shows and concerts that perform there, so it stays busy and profitable. As far as getting an AHL team, we have a pretty popular ECHL with the Kansas City Mavericks, but they play at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena which is in eastern Independence. Not sure if the city would support more than one minor league hockey team.
