It was donated to the city by the government of Mexico. It was made by Mexican sculptor Sebastian who seems to have one of his creations in about every city in Mexico... I'm not a big fan of his work personally. This one seems a little out of place considering the surroundings IMO.

It was not donated by the Mexican Governament.

Q. Who commissioned you to create the sculpture and why?

A. I was commissioned at the request of the Association of Mexican Entrepreneurs of San Antonio to design the sculpture because I have made numerous urban monumental sculptures for Japan, Canada, and Latin America. I made the sculpture in Mexico, and it was shipped to San Antonio in six pieces. Subsequently, the Torch of Friendship was presented to the City of San Antonio as a gift from the Association.

The second shot (with the long skyline) is nice. What we need to hope for now is a multi-dimensional skyline, something where buildings pop from behind buildings - like iin the first shot.

That last pic. does make our skyline look big but it sad that its not. If you drive on the highway around Downtown ,you pass through it quick. Hopefully the expansion of the river on the northside of downtown will expand some buildings that way. Enlarge the cities downtown area.

Not really related to skyscrapers...but it looks like the Red Roof Inn got a paint job. MUCH BETTER imo...way better than it's former white and red self. Now the other side of 37 will have some color before you get to Vidorra haha.

Great photo.

Imagine what this might look like in a few more years if the RiverCenter people do in fact develop their existing parking garage in to a luxury hotel.

It would put another 300-400 footer there and really work on the density of the area (which already feels pretty dense, 3-4 stories, on street level)....

They're enclosing those parts because they're actually the top rooms of the penthouse condos.

from what i understand, they would take the vacant lot on the NE corner and make it a parking garage and put the hotel where the current Rivercenter Comedy Club garage is (bordering Commerce Street). hope that makes sense.

(the existing parking garage on the north side of the property would remain unchanged.)

Good luck with that; so long as we have nothing but old people on the Historic and Design Review Comission they'll fight everything new, unless it's tan or light brown.
