Tallest building not in largest city or metro of State

I just had occasion to be looking into the RSA Battle House building in Mobile, AL and read that it is the tallest building in Alabama, while Mobile is certainly not the most populous in the State of Alabama.

Which other states have a tallest that is not in the State's largest city/metro? Needless to say, it's not the case in GA, where the tallest are of course in Atlanta.

Texas (tallest in Houston, I think)
Ohio, arguably (tallest in Cleveland, which is not the largest metro depending on how you count)

Texas' soon to be tallest will be in Austin.

So that counts.

OH is pretty muddled.

The tallest building is in Cleveland.

Columbus is largest city proper
Cincy is largest MSA
Cleveland is largest CSA

So kinda?

In reality, the 3 C's are all around the same size, so the fact that the tallest building happens to be in Cleveland is not terribly out of sorts with anything.

Cali is a good set-up for a good old fashioned SSP spire debate!

Mississippi.

Largest (partial) metro is the Memphis suburbs, largest city and self-contained metro is Jackson, tallest building is a casino in Biloxi.

Jacksonville is technically Florida's largest City so Miami's towers could count though it is obviously the largest Metro.

Jacksonville also has 758 square miles of land area, while Miami is only 36 square miles

And in terms of Metro GDP, Cincy takes the slight lead, and Columbus now has a larger economy than Cleveland
The 3 C's are fascinating

Missouri is a funny one:

- The tallest accessible structure (the STL Arch) is in the largest metro, but second largest city

- The tallest building (One Kansas City Place) is in the largest city, but second largest metro

So off the top of my head, these would be the ones (right)?

Alabama - Mobile
Maine - I think it's some small town church is the tallest?
Mississippi - Biloxi
North Dakota - Bismark
South Carolina - Columbia
Texas - Austin

Ohio is tricky as the 3C's are basically the same stats so Cleveland is fine in regards to CSA. Missouri has KC as the largest city but STL has the largest metro. KC would be fine with the thread's criteria.

SSP diagrams says the 204 ft. church steeple is in Portland, and the state's second-tallest structure, a 201 ft. residential tower, is under construction right now in Portland.

SF's Salesforce Tower is the rightful holder of Cali's tallest title, IMO.

That wimpy little stick poking out the top of Wilshire Grand......give me a break.

Decided to start the debate yourself, I see!

If you go by roof height, floor count, or the highest occupied floor then LA's US Bank tower is tops in California.

New Jersey

Largest city is Newark, tallest building is 99 Hudson in JC

Both cities are in the NYC metro, however

Although not a US state, Alberta is a really good example. Edmonton has the tallest building (which is also the tallest in Canada outside of Toronto), but Calgary is the largest city and metro

Yes, there are multiple ways to skin this particular cat.

But by my extremely scientific and precise "visually, which one looks the tallest?" method, Salesforce is the Cali winner in my book.

Hartford is the 4th largest city proper in Connecticut, although the largest MSA. It has the state's 3 tallest buildings.

I agree with the post above that Salesforce wins California. I'd put US Bank in 2nd.

Actually, it has the 4 tallest buildings, I think.
