It says targeting shovels in the ground this summer. Although when I googled this earlier today. There were articles stretching back years saying that same thing. "oh right away, shovels in the ground within months." Going on like that for years.
Manitoba's remaining 2-lane part of the TransCanada is much shorter and has much "easier" terrain to contend with in comparison to the stretch from Kenora to MB.
I imagine we are several years away before MB feels any pressure to complete this section, but I would put money down that the highway on both sides of the border will be complete at the same time.
Manitoba has been upgrading the TCH between Winnipeg and Falcon lake over the last several years. I think, in preparation for an increase in the speed limit, and the eventual twinning of the highway.
Bolded: Not so sure about that, couple large hills, a narrow stretch between two lakes, not much different from the Ontario side aside from the blasting that will be required.
It’s just going to be very expensive compared to all the other things the province’s very limited resources could be spent on. But I think they will probably move in this now that Ontario apparently is finally doing so, after half a century of dawdling.

The "gotta save face highway project" trumps all other road projects in MB. As was evidenced by the timing of when the Virden to Sask. border twinning was complete.

Ha. The political liability of going from a 4 lane road in a neighbouring jurisdiction to a 2 lane road in Manitoba is too great for any politician to bear.
The Province will be holding public consults on the Portage Bypass bridge replacement thing. I wonder if they'll include plans for the #1/16 interchange and the other interchange in between the two locations.

All the article says is a one liner at the end that someone at the Province said they are investigating future twinning. Which is extremely broad.
Even if there’s nothing on 1 & 16, one should still go in and say, “While you’re at it, you must also build the interchange there. The fatality rates over the past few years are simply unacceptable.”

I saw the press release on this thing... honestly what kind of "consultation" do you need on replacing an existing woefully inadequate overpass? It's like holding a consultation on fixing a burned out lightbulb... just do it. This seems like a stalling tactic more than anything... "look guys! we're working on it!"
So just take the time. What could they possibly need to change, unless it's a rethink of the larger area. Which Biff said may be in the cards. At there was the thought.

Not a Manitoban highway, but still closely related.
The news article says that I-29 is closed from the border to Fargo, but Google Maps shows the closure to be North-Dakota-wide (except certain pockets).
That’s 350 km of 4-lane divided freeway closed! It’s actually as bad as when Ontario Provincial Police closes large section of TCH (11 or 17, many times both).
Not saying it's routine, but usually happens every winter. Same with #1 west of Winnipeg. Closes sometimes from Winnipeg to the SK border. There's even gates that are closed. Such as at the west end of Headingly.
Mostly winds this time. Haven't had blizzard conditions yet this year. No big storms either.

Highway projects after the pandemic, anyone?
I mean, does anyone think we will see a few mega ones after the pandemic is over?
Same old ones on my mind: PTH 100 (complete grade separation), PTH 190, TCH (traffic light removals and twinning), PTH 75 (complete grade separation and Morris bypass).
PS: Interestingly, PTH 32 twinning is happening even right now.
