If a given nation wants their own official team, fine, then achieve sovereignty, and THEN a bunch of stuff will ensue, among which, embassies, a UN seat, your own treaties, your own military, your own international sports teams, etc.
I disagree. It depends on the membership rules of international sport organizations.

In the case of the Olympics, only countries are allowed to compete; accordingly, Scottish, Welch and English athletes are all competing under the Union Jack. But some international sport events include non-sovereign nations as well, like the FIFA World Cup as mentioned.

Anyway, I got sidetracked in my exchange with theman23. I wasn’t thinking about a Team Québec at the Olympics, but at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship.

Btw, Hong Kong is a member of the IIHF

lol no, terrible idea. And I say this as someone with extensive French-Canadian family history who is often defending Quebec and offering Quebecois perspectives in rooms full of fellow anglos.

I also recall watching Puerto Rico (the IOC allows them to compete under their own flag ) beat the USA Dream Team on the basketball court at the Olympics.
Even if true?
What’s there to believe? Those are the actual NHL players by origin. Are you saying there are other Quebec born NHL players not in the list?

All I said was that a Quebec Hockey team wouldn’t be very good. Not sure where the rest of your post is coming from. With that being said, I don’t think it’s a good idea for QC to get it’s own team. But for other reasons.

Huberdeau-Bergeron-Mantha
Marchessault-Dubois-Gourde
Drouin-Danault-Perron
Duclair-Beauvillier-Chiasson
Paquette

Chabot-Letang
Girard-Savard
Vlasic-Scandella

Fleury
Crawford

This team is...not that great, and both goalies will be 36 in time for Beijing. The other goalie options? Domingue, Montembeault, and Bernier.
Quebec simply does not produce the number and quality of players that it used to relative to the rest of the world, so their teams will only become less and less competitive on the world stage as time goes on. I suppose winning wouldn't matter as much as physically having a team would, though.

I think i'd take BC over them:

Kane-Nugent-Hopkins-Reinhart
Benn-Johansen-Connolly
Kerfoot-Barzal-Virtanen
Khaira-Sissons-Turris
Brouwer

Rielly-Barrie
Theodore-Weber
Stecher-Benn

Price
Broissoit

Gotta throw Brendan Gallagher on the BC team.

Quebec's athletes would no longer enjoy the truckloads of funding from the feds if they were separate.

This could become a great a dilemma for the players. I could see some Quebec born players wanting to play for Canada in the big international tournaments including the Olympics. For most, provincialism disappears once they move to the big leagues. I think the politics for the players would be awful. This would drive wedges at so many levels. For me, I have no interest in a Quebec-ROC game. I want to see my country play against other real countries.

Just imagine Canada Quebec international hockey matches...
Wales and Scotland were separate nations, brought together under one ruler as the United Kingdom. Quebec was never its own nation.

My point still stands: you don't have your own national team in any sport primarily because you're assured of winning. It's question of representation, not of domination.

In any event, I don't care if Quebec gets international teams or not, so I guess that puts me mildly on the status quo side here.

That said, while Quebec's hypothetical team right now in 2021 doesn't look like it would be among the strongest IIHF ranked nations, that doesn't mean that at some point in the future Quebec couldn't use "pride" in having an Équipe Québec to ramp up its hockey development and become a decent hockey powerhouse on the level of Sweden or Finland. The roots and resources for this type of transformation are certainly there, even if at this point such an improvement seems unlikely in the short or medium terms.
