Here's another set of four color slides [1970s?] from the Los Angeles Planning Dept. (found on ebay)

There's no information and no dates.

#1

I spy the Bradbury Building and the Metropolitan Water and Power Building (home of the Million Dollar Theater), among others.

#2

#3

I wonder how much longer that house with the red roof lasted? (after this slide was taken)

This last one (which appears unrelated to the others) has 'Industry Glendale' written on the border of the slide.

note the bend in the river....upper right corner-->

69 years ago today.

Since I happened to see this photo dated January 6, and today is that, I thought I'd post it.

This image has been flipped.

eBay

Here's roughly the same view today. The building in the foreground on the left with the three cylindrical tanks on the roof is on E 7th between Towne and Stanford Avenues. The red-roofed house disappeared between 1980 and 1994.

Thanks ScottyB.

I just realized the 'industrial park' in the color slide is where the runways used to be at Grand Central Airport.

wandp

I must not have looked at the slide very closely. The old terminal is on the left side plain as day.

detail

We've visited 'Grand Central' numerous ties on the thread.

This reminds me, I recently came across a great photograph of silent film star Bebe Daniels at the airport. I'll see if I can find it and post it before I turn in.

I think I labeled most of the buildings which are still there (resisted adding the dates & architects)

Here is an absolutely amazing photograph of film director King Vidor.

ebay ( no longer listed)

I'm not sure which location is shown in the Wm. Grimes photograph, but I'm leaning towards Porter Ranch.

Below is a list of locations for 'Billy The Kid' [1930] -from imdb

Zion National Park, Springdale, Utah

Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

Kit Carson's Cave, Gallup, New Mexico

Porter Ranch, Northridge, Los Angeles, California

for search purposes:
William Grimes, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer

LOL. Actually only the Spring St (rear) entrance of the Roundhouse would have been visible in your ebay shot:

Great shot of King Vidor.

Porter Ranch Rd:

gsv

Porter Ranch is the edge of the sprawl these days. One can see bulldozers terracing virgin hillsides for house lots. We'll never learn. Omg, they lay a lot of lawn out there.

Where's Bebe? Is the photo from the Grand Opening? I don't think I've never seen any of those

Given my botanico-horticultural interests, you can imagine that I've always been interested in that big Prickly Pear in front of the Round House. Since the pads can easily be broken off and rooted, it wouldn't be surprising if many pieces of that plant were taken as souvenirs and planted all over the place, and then pieces of those pieces distributed around even further. Some sort of plant DNA testing would probably indicate a lot of specimens around L.A. and its suburbs representing one original plant, and I'd guess that they probably derive from this very plant. (The next question would be . . . the origin of the Round House plant; maybe it was a propagation from, what, a Prickly Pear specimen at Mission San Gabriel?)

The Round House also had its own garden, with what I take were rather "naïve school" sculptures of, well, I think Adam and Eve were mentioned, and there were others too, I believe (just going off the top of my head here; I have more info squirreled away somewhere). Has anyone ever seen a sketch or drawing or other image of these sculptures? I wonder what happened to the originals...

While searching for Bebe, I happened upon this interesting photograph.

"LAPD cruiser, Hill Street tunnels, 1939."

old file / pinterest

Look how far the hill has pulled away from the tunnel leaving a rather large gap..................................................(enough space for a dead body...in pieces)

also note the rather slipshod wire fence.
______

(not sure if we've seen this photograph before; if so.. it's definitely worth a second look)

I didn't realize John Mack Brown was such a looker. (later known as 'Johnny' Mack Brown)

on the set of 'Billy The Kid' [1930]

http://www.alamy.com/stock-photo-bil...-10140871.html

note the camera covered in what looks like a pillow.................................

hmmm....to shield it from the sun...to keep the dust off...or both?
____

just noticed: The horse is about to step in that 'loop' of cord (I hope no one was at the other end getting ready to pull)

I have to admit, I have a difficult time watching old westerns because of dirty tricks to the animals. -like using wires to trip them.
